The heart of the Highlands in the Abruzzo village of Pizzoferrato
The Scottish Festival of Pizzoferrato is an event dedicated to Scottish culture that brings the small mountain village of Pizzoferrato, in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo, to life. For an entire weekend, the streets and squares of the town, particularly Piazza San Rocco, turn into a corner of the Highlands: bagpipes, tartan, kilts, traditional dances, and Celtic atmospheres guide residents and visitors on an evocative journey through Scottish traditions.
This is the first festival of its kind in Abruzzo to be officially recognized and affiliated with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS), the international organization that promotes and preserves traditional Scottish dance worldwide. Conceived and directed by maestro Daniel Lapenna, with musical direction by maestro Berardo Di Mattia, the festival is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Pizzoferrato.
The program combines entertainment, culture, and participation. The absolute star is the City of Rome Pipe Band, which brings the unmistakable sound of Scottish bagpipes through the village alleys. Numerous workshops are open to everyone: bagpipe and drum labs, traditional dance lessons, and moments dedicated to discovering whisky and craft beer. The traditional Ghillies Ball and the grand closing Ceilidh Partyโa folk celebration with live music and collective dancing that involves all participantsโare not to be missed.
The festival is more than just folklore: it preserves a deep historical bond between Pizzoferrato and the British world. During the event, homage is paid to Major Lionel Wigram, the British officer who fell in the Battle of Pizzoferrato in February 1944, remembered as one of the inspirations for the Maiella Brigade. The ceremony takes place at the historic Tower of Pizzoferrato, perched on the rock that overlooks the town. A tribute is also dedicated to Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet.
Throughout the route, there are food stalls featuring Scottish specialties and typical Abruzzo products, whisky and craft beer tastings, themed craft exhibits, and street performances. It is an opportunity to combine Celtic traditions with the hospitality and flavors of the Abruzzo mountains in an unusual and fascinating encounter between two seemingly distant cultures.
The first edition opened on Saturday, June 6 at 4:00 PM with the inaugural ceremony, followed by Scottish bagpipe and drum workshops, traditional dance labs, and in the evening, the concert by the City of Rome Pipe Band.
Sunday, June 7, from 10:00 AM, activities continued with the inaugural parade through the village, the homage to Major Lionel Wigram at the Tower of Pizzoferrato, and the tribute to Robert Burns. In the afternoon, the traditional Ghillies Ball took place, followed in the evening by new performances by the City of Rome Pipe Band and the grand closing Ceilidh Party.
Pizzoferrato is located in the province of Chieti, in the mountainous region of Abruzzo. By car, it can be reached from the Val di Sangro motorway exit (A14) or from Roccaraso, continuing along the provincial roads towards the village. The nearest train station is the Sangritana line; the reference airport is Pescara.
Activities take place in the public spaces of the village, particularly in Piazza San Rocco. For updated information on workshops requiring reservations and program details, it is recommended to contact the Municipality of Pizzoferrato.
