The patronal feast of Roccaspinalveti, blending faith, rural heritage, and the traditional Palio del Covone
In the heart of the inland Vastese region, at an altitude of 740 meters in the province of Chieti, the town of Roccaspinalveti celebrates its patron saint, Saint Pius I, a 2nd-century pope and martyr, with a festival held around July 11th, the date of his liturgical feast. It is the most cherished event of the year for the local community, uniting all sixteen districts of the town and welcoming back many emigrants who return for the occasion.
The most iconic part of the festivities is the Palio del Covone, a tradition rooted in local agricultural history. Historically, wheat sheaves were donated to Saint Pius as a gesture of gratitude for the harvest; over time, this custom evolved into a spirited competition between the districts. On the morning of the feast, after the banners are displayed in Piazza Roma, the districts pull carts laden with their wheat sheaves in a colorful parade through the town center. In the afternoon, the threshing takes place, and a jury awards the Palio to the winning district.
The Palio is the centerpiece of a broad program dedicated to promoting rural heritage and traditional farming arts: demonstrations of ancient harvesting techniques, a technical committee that visits local gardens to award the "best crop," agricultural exhibitions, and tastings of typical Abruzzese peasant cuisine. The festival offers a deep dive into the identity and roots of the community and the wider Vastese area.
The devotional aspect remains central: on the patronal day, a Solemn Mass is celebrated in honor of Saint Pius I, followed by a procession through the streets of the town, featuring the districts and their banners. The parish of San Michele Arcangelo, which houses a rare silver processional cross dating back to the Renaissance, oversees the liturgical events alongside the community.
The festival concludes with a major free evening concert in the square, which has hosted well-known names in Italian music over the years. The night culminates with entertainment and the announcement of the winning district of the Palio, in a shared atmosphere of celebration that blends faith, tradition, and popular joy.
The patronal feast of Roccaspinalveti returns on Saturday, July 11, 2026, on the day of Saint Pius I. The community and the districts will gather for the traditional Palio del Covone, with carts carrying wheat sheaves dedicated to the Saint, followed by the harvesting, the Solemn Mass, and the procession through the town center.
The main evening event is the free concert by I Nomadi, scheduled for 9:30 PM in the square. The historic band from Emilia will perform their most famous hits, from Io Vagabondo to Un Pugno di Sabbia, Dio รจ Morto, and Canzone per un'amica, for an evening that promises to draw crowds from across the Vastese region.
Roccaspinalveti is located in the hinterland of the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway exit at Vasto Sud, heading inland along the Val Sinello valley. The nearest train station is Vasto-San Salvo on the Adriatic line, from where you can continue by car or local bus connections.
The patronal feast events and the evening concert are generally free to attend. For information, you may contact the Municipality of Roccaspinalveti (Piazza Roma 25, tel. +39 0873 959131) or the local Pro Loco association.
