The patron saint's festival in the village overlooking Lake Bomba
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the first days of August, the small Municipality of Colledimezzo, nestled on the Castellano hill between Mount Butino and Mount Rinello at an altitude of about 425 meters, gathers for its Patronal Feast. It is the most anticipated event of the summer for this village in the province of Chieti, located in the heart of inland Abruzzo and overlooking the Sangro River valley, just a short distance from the picturesque Lake Bomba.
The religious calendar of Colledimezzo intertwines several devotions: the Assumption is celebrated on August 4th, and San Rocco, the patron saint of the village, on August 5th. One of the village's historic churches is dedicated to him, alongside the parish church of San Giovanni Evangelista e Apostolo and the church of Sant'Antonio. The festival thus combines liturgical solemnity with the warmth of the community, at a time when the village repopulates thanks to the return of many emigrants and families originally from Colledimezzo.
The festival day follows the traditional rhythm of Abruzzese patronal feasts. In the morning, the marching band travels through the village streets to announce the festivities, followed by the solemn Holy Mass and the procession carrying the saint's statue through the historic center. The afternoon is dedicated to institutional events and social gatherings, while in the evening, the village lights up with musical entertainment and food stalls managed by the Colledimezzo Pro Loco, where one can savor traditional local products.
The festival is also the ideal opportunity to discover Colledimezzo, a village of ancient origins founded around the 10th century and long linked to the D'Avalos family. Walking through the alleys, you will encounter the church of San Giovanni in the oldest part of the town, the remains of the ancient castle, and open views of the Sangro valley and the lake. Its location, between mountains and water, makes the village a destination also appreciated by nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Colledimezzo APS, the Patronal Feast represents the defining identity moment of the year for this small community in Abruzzo. Faith, music, good food, and conviviality merge into two days that tell the authentic soul of the Sangro valley villages.
The Colledimezzo Patronal Feast is expected to return in 2026, as it does every summer, to celebrate San Rocco in the small village of the Sangro valley, in the province of Chieti. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Pro Loco of Colledimezzo APS.
Confirming the structure of previous editions, the festival should take place over two days in early August, with the marching band through the village streets, the solemn Holy Mass, the procession, afternoon institutional events, and evening entertainment with the Pro Loco stands. For the final program, please refer to the association's official channels.
Colledimezzo can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Val di Sangro exit) by driving up the state road along the Sangro valley; the village is about 70 km from Chieti. The nearest train stations are Vasto-San Salvo or Lanciano, from which you can continue by car.
The festival is traditionally held in the first days of August (August 4-5). The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
