Tyrolean folklore in the pastures of Racines

The Schuhplattlerfest is one of the most genuine traditional festivals in the South Tyrolean summer. It takes place in the municipality of Racines (Ratschings), in the Province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, specifically across the pastures of the sunny Ratschings-Jaufen hiking area, above the village of Racines di Dentro (Innerratschings). For one day, the high-altitude mountain huts become the natural stage for one of the most iconic folk performances of historical Tyrol.

What is the Schuhplatteln

The Schuhplatteln — literally "shoe-beating" — is the traditional dance typical of Tyrol and Bavaria. Dancers, wearing traditional costumes (Tracht), create the rhythm by clapping their hands and striking their thighs and the soles of their shoes, alternating with jumps, spins, and the characteristic shouts of joy (Juchzer). Originally a courtship dance reserved for men and codified in the mid-19th century, it is now performed by numerous folklore groups (Trachtenvereine) in South Tyrol, who pass it down from generation to generation, and is now open to women as well.

From hut to hut, amidst music and delicacies

During the Schuhplattlerfest, Schuhplattler groups from all over South Tyrol perform at various mountain huts in the Ratschings-Jaufen area, offering visitors an authentic spectacle directly on the high-altitude meadows. Between performances, you can enjoy South Tyrolean culinary specialties served in the huts — from speck to dumplings, and from mountain cheeses to traditional desserts — in an atmosphere of convivial mountain joy. Those who wish can even join the dance: the hand-clapping, jumps, and Juchzer are sure to involve both young and old.

A day for the whole family

The festival can be reached by walking along the scenic trails of the hiking area, which is easily accessible via the Racines-Giovo (Ratschings-Jaufen) ski lifts. The Alpine environment, pristine nature, and festive atmosphere make the Schuhplattlerfest an event suitable for families with children, who can discover one of the most vibrant traditions of Tyrolean culture up close.

Organized with the support of the Racines Tourist Association (Ratschings Tourismus), the Schuhplattlerfest celebrates the folkloric heritage of South Tyrol and the deep bond between the community of Racines and its mountains. It is an authentic showcase of the region's costumes, music, and gastronomy, set in a stunning Alpine landscape at the foot of the Stubai Alps.
