About Schenner Langes

With the Schenner Langes, the village of Scena/Schenna, set on a sunny plateau above Merano, welcomes the arrival of spring. For several weeks between March and April, fourteen local associations bring to life a rich calendar of events: folk theatre by the Volksbühne, the Musikkapelle spring concert, farmers' markets, a herb market, traditional dance and singing evenings, cabaret, and family-friendly activities. A widespread festival that weaves together culture, South Tyrolean tradition, and community life in the heart of the Burgraviato.

Schenner Langes: the cultural spring of Scena

The Schenner Langes is a series of cultural weeks that, every spring, marks the awakening of Scena/Schenna, a town in South Tyrol/Südtirol nestled on a sunny terrace above Merano, in the province of Bolzano. The local dialect name — Langes meaning "spring" — captures the spirit of the event: celebrating the season of rebirth with a widespread programme of events that spans several weeks, from the end of winter to the height of spring.

A choral celebration of the community

The strength of the Schenner Langes lies in the involvement of the local community fabric. Fourteen local associations work together to build the calendar, which features eighteen events of various kinds: music, theatre, folk traditions, gastronomy, and moments for families. The direction is entrusted to the Scena Tourist Association (Tourismusverein Schenna), which coordinates clubs, bands, theatre groups, and local producers.

The typical programme

  • Volksbühne Schenna — the folk theatre group stages dialect plays that entertain both adults and children;
  • Musikkapelle Schenna Spring Concert — the village brass band offers its traditional symphonic-band performance;
  • Farmers' Market (Bauernmarkt) — farmers from the surrounding mountain farms offer gastronomic specialities from the fields, gardens, and cellars, alongside local handicrafts;
  • Herb Market (Unkräutermarktl) — dedicated to the wild and aromatic herbs of the South Tyrolean spring;
  • Traditional dance and singing evenings — convivial moments such as "Dancing and singing together", which bring the traditional repertoire back to life;
  • Cabaret and family shows — comedy evenings and events designed for audiences of all ages.

Scena and the Burgraviato in spring

Scena is one of the most beloved destinations in the Merano area: its mild climate, hiking trails through vineyards and blooming orchards, and the open view over the Merano basin make it an ideal starting point for discovering the South Tyrolean spring. The Schenner Langes fits into this context by enhancing the town's identity: an opportunity to experience the German-speaking culture of South Tyrol, the warmth of its associations, and the genuine flavours of the peasant tradition.

A well-established event

Now in its thirtieth year, the festival has become a permanent fixture in the spring calendar of the Municipality of Scena and the entire Burgraviato, alongside other seasonal initiatives such as "Schenna blüht auf". For those visiting South Tyrol in March and April, the Schenner Langes is an authentic way to connect with the daily life and traditions of a mountain community.
