Readings and early music in the medieval heart of Settimo Vittone
As the sun sets over the Canavese region, the Pieve di San Lorenzo monumental complex in Settimo Vittone becomes the natural stage for an intimate cultural festival: Scende la sera nel giardino antico. Promoted by the Municipality of Settimo Vittone, the event weaves together words and music in one of the most evocative spots in the province of Turin, nestled at the foot of the Alps and just a stone's throw from the Aosta Valley.
The events are held at the Pieve di San Lorenzo, in Piazza Conte Rinaldo Setto. Together with the nearby Baptistery of San Giovanni, this Romanesque church is one of the area's medieval treasures, recognized and protected by the FAI (National Trust of Italy). Its austere and secluded architecture provides the perfect setting for readings and concerts in an intimate atmosphere, far from the bustle of major circuits.
The program features two distinct themes. On one hand, literature, with readings of poems and short stories by Guido Gozzano, the Piedmontese crepuscular poet who found inspiration in the landscapes of the Canavese and the hills of Turin. On the other, music, with a concert that, as the official presentation states, offers "a look into the past with traces of apparent modernity": early repertoire reinterpreted with contemporary sensibility by ensembles specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music.
"Scende la sera nel giardino antico" is not a large village fair, but a niche event for those seeking high-quality culture in authentic surroundings. It is the ideal opportunity to discover Settimo Vittone, its historic center, and the Pieve complex, combining an evening stroll through the village with a moment of poetry and music. The festival is part of the Municipality's vibrant summer season, which is rich in offerings tied to the heritage and traditions of the Canavese.
The 2026 festival features two evenings at the Pieve di San Lorenzo, in Piazza Conte Rinaldo Setto in Settimo Vittone, both starting at 6:00 PM. The edition combines poetic words with early music in an intimate and curated program.
