About Scalettese Palio

The Scalettese Palio is the grand summer competition that ignites the town of Scaletta Zanclea, on the Ionian coast of the Province of Messina, every year between July and August. The town's four districts—Scaletta Marina, Scaletta Superiore, Guidomandri Marina, and Guidomandri Superiore—face off for about a week in games, sports challenges, and skill trials, from the opening parade to the final treasure hunt in Piazza Municipio. A popular and participatory event, established in 2018, that unites generations in a spirit of celebration and community identity.

The Scalettese Palio, a community festival on the Ionian coast

The Scalettese Palio is one of the most cherished summer events in the town of Scaletta Zanclea, a small village overlooking the Ionian Sea in the Province of Messina, Sicily. Every summer, between late July and early August, the town transforms into a grand arena where its four districts compete for the title with pride and a strong sense of belonging.

Four districts, one single challenge

The heart of the Palio is the competition between the four corners of the territory: Scaletta Marina and Guidomandri Marina, which stretch along the Ionian coast, and Scaletta Superiore and Guidomandri Superiore, perched in the hills. Each district fields its own team, recognizable by its team colors, and appoints a captain to lead the participants throughout the week of competition.

Games, challenges, and a treasure hunt

The program alternates between sports, skill games, and moments of pure fun. Among the most popular challenges are the beach games in Scaletta Marina, the trials in the district squares, and the spectacular final treasure hunt, which fills the town streets with the four team colors until the finish line in Piazza Municipio. The event opens with an inaugural parade that starts from each individual district and gathers the entire community.

  • Where: Squares and streets of the four districts of Scaletta Zanclea
  • When: Between July and August, for about a week
  • Who participates: The teams from the four districts, with about a hundred direct competitors
  • Grand finale: Treasure hunt and proclamation in Piazza Municipio

A young event that has already become a tradition

Born in 2018, the Scalettese Palio has quickly established itself as a defining event for the town, capable of engaging different generations and forging new friendships beyond the borders of the individual districts. The event is organized by the Municipality of Scaletta Zanclea together with the Pro Loco and the House Party association, with the support of the citizens. As the organizers love to repeat, there is never just one winner at the Palio: the true victor is always Scaletta Zanclea and its desire to come together.
