The Bethlehem of two thousand years ago comes to life in the alleys of this medieval village

Every year during the Christmas season, the charming Quartarello district in Forza d'Agrò, in the province of Messina, transforms into the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. The Living Nativity - Bethlehem in Forza d'Agrò, organized by the Associazione Orchidea, winds through the narrow, winding alleys perched at the foot of the Norman castle ruins, in a medieval setting that provides a natural backdrop for the sacred representation.
Around one hundred actors in period costumes animate the route, recreating with extreme realism the typical moments of daily life from the past. Along the stairways and alleys, visitors encounter artisan workshops where long-forgotten trades come back to life:
The attention to detail is absolute: every modern object is banished, leaving space only for flickering lanterns, open fires, and essential settings that transport the visitor back in time to the humble stable where Jesus was born.
Along the way, visitors are offered traditional local products: warm, freshly baked bread, fresh local oranges and mandarins, walnuts, chestnuts, and a good glass of local wine, all accompanied by traditional Christmas melodies. The Living Nativity is the heart of the 'Christmas in the Village' program, which enriches Forza d'Agrò during the holidays with markets, artisan nativity exhibitions, and tastings.
The representation has its roots in the nativity tradition started by Saint Francis, who set up the first sacred representation of the Nativity in Greccio on Christmas night in 1223. In Forza d'Agrò, the initiative has grown over time since the late nineties, evolving from a few scenes into an elaborate production involving much of the community. Today, it is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the Ionian Messina area, attracting visitors from all over Sicily to one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
The Living Nativity - Bethlehem in Forza d'Agrò is a recurring Christmas event, but the precise dates for the 2026-2027 edition have not yet been officially published. Based on past editions, performances are usually held in the period between December 26 and January 6 in the Quartarello district of Forza d'Agrò (ME).
For this edition as well, the setup curated by the Associazione Orchidea is expected, featuring costumed actors, ancient trade workshops, and local products. The detailed program will be announced by the organizers closer to the holidays.
