About Savoca Living Nativity

Every year during the Christmas season, the historic center of Savoca—a charming medieval village in the Province of Messina, world-renowned as a filming location for "The Godfather"—transforms into an ancient Bethlehem. Organized by the S. Maria Assunta Parish community, the Living Nativity brings the village alleys to life with around a hundred costumed actors, artisan workshops, rural life scenes, and the re-enactment of the Nativity. It is a journey back in time through ancient stones, churches, and palaces, enriched by tastings of traditional Sicilian products.

A living nativity in the village of "The Godfather"

Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Ionian coast, about twenty kilometers from Taormina and forty from Messina, Savoca is one of Sicily's most fascinating villages. Famous worldwide as a key location in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather—where iconic scenes were filmed at Bar Vitelli and the Church of San Nicolò—this town in the Province of Messina hosts a Living Nativity every Christmas, turning its medieval historic center into a evocative Bethlehem.

The Nativity re-enactment

Organized by the S. Maria Assunta Parish community, the Savoca Living Nativity fills the village alleys with the representation of the birth of Baby Jesus. Around a hundred actors in period costumes portray the Holy Family, shepherds, and ancient trades, bringing artisan workshops and scenes of daily rural Sicilian life to the present. Visitors wander through the narrow streets as if traveling back in time, surrounded by the ancient stones, churches, and historic palaces that serve as a natural stage for the re-enactment.

An experience of faith and tradition

Conceived by the archpriest as the "nativity of hospitality," the event is both a manifestation of faith and a moment of gathering for the entire community. The surreal atmosphere of the village, where time seems to stand still, guides visitors along a route punctuated by tastings of typical Sicilian products, from traditional bread and pastries to specialties prepared in the ancient workshops reconstructed for the occasion.

The medieval village of Savoca

As one of the most notable art towns in the Province of Messina, Savoca preserves a historic center rich in palaces and places of worship: from the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta to the Church of San Nicolò, and from the Castle of Pentefur to the famous Palazzo Trimarchi, now known as Bar Vitelli. This intact, timeless medieval setting makes the Savoca Living Nativity one of the most evocative Christmas re-enactments in Ionian Sicily.

Savoca Living Nativity — edition 2026

The S. Maria Assunta Parish of Savoca will once again host its Living Nativity in the historic center of the medieval village for the 2026 Christmas season. The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: as per tradition, the event is expected to take place between late December and Epiphany, bringing the village alleys to life with costumed actors, artisan workshops, and tastings of local products.

For Christmas 2026, the Savoca Living Nativity is expected to return to animate the historic center of the village in the Province of Messina, with the Nativity re-enactment curated by the S. Maria Assunta Parish community. The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. Based on previous editions, the event is generally held between late December and Epiphany. It is advisable to check the parish channels and local press for updates.
