The autumn festival of traditional flavors in the village of the Ghiodaro Valley
The San Martino Festival — Scents and Flavors of the Ghiodaro Valley is the most anticipated autumn event in Mongiuffi Melia, a small town of just over five hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 421 meters in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. The village, formed by the two hamlets of Mongiuffi and Melia connected by a characteristic bridge over the Ghiòdaro stream, opens its streets and squares to a celebration that weaves together devotion, gastronomy, and rural culture.
The festival is linked to the figure of Saint Martin of Tours, celebrated on November 11th, a day traditionally associated throughout Sicily with the racking of wine and the tasting of the new vintage. In Mongiuffi Melia, the occasion becomes an opportunity to rediscover the flavors of the cold season and the crafts linked to the land, in a village atmosphere where every alley smells of must, roasted chestnuts, and freshly cooked products.
The heart of the event is the exhibition market with numerous stalls showcasing handicrafts and typical Sicilian products. Among the specialties featured at the festival:
One of the most beloved moments is the live production of tuma and ricotta, with raw milk transformed according to traditional techniques. The village streets also come alive with wandering folk music, the evocative parade of the Sicilian cart, guided tours of the ancient palmenti (wine presses) and museum cellars, areas dedicated to children's games, and musical performances by Sicilian folk groups.
The festival concludes in style on November 11th, Saint Martin's Day, with Holy Mass in honor of the Saint followed by a convivial gathering in Piazza San Nicolò, as per ancient tradition. A day that unites the community of Mongiuffi Melia and the many visitors who choose this authentic corner of the province of Messina every year to experience the most genuine side of Sicily.
The 2026 San Martino Festival in Mongiuffi Melia will take place on November 8, 9, and 11, 2026. The consolidated formula of previous editions is confirmed: an exhibition market with stalls of typical Sicilian products, tastings of new wine, cheeses, sausage, porchetta, and chestnuts, live processing of tuma and ricotta, wandering folklore, Sicilian carts, and areas dedicated to children. The festival will close on November 11th, Saint Martin's Day, with Holy Mass and a convivial moment in Piazza San Nicolò. The full program with times and shows will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
Mongiuffi Melia can be reached by car from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Roccalumera or Giardini Naxos-Taormina exit), continuing along the provincial road that climbs up the Ghiodaro Valley. The nearest train station is Roccalumera-Mandanici on the Messina-Siracusa line, while the reference airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Reggio Calabria.
Admission to the festival is free. Food stalls generally open in the late morning and continue until the evening; tastings and typical products can be purchased directly from the exhibitors.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing to visit the historic center and the palmenti, and planning to be there on November 11th to attend the Holy Mass and the final convivial gathering in Piazza San Nicolò.
