About San Martino Festival

Every November, the small village of Mongiuffi Melia, in the province of Messina, celebrates the San Martino Festival, one of the most heartfelt gastronomic events in the Peloritani mountains. For three days, the historic center fills with stalls featuring typical Sicilian products—cheeses, sausage, spit-roasted porchetta, chestnuts, honey, and new wine—accompanied by live demonstrations of tuma and ricotta making, wandering folk music, traditional Sicilian carts, and the unmissable convivial gathering on November 11th in Piazza San Nicolò.

An autumn tradition in the Ghiodaro Valley

The San Martino Festival — Scents and Flavors of the Ghiodaro Valley is the most anticipated autumn event in Mongiuffi Melia, a small town of just over five hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 421 meters in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. The village, formed by the two hamlets of Mongiuffi and Melia connected by a characteristic bridge over the Ghiòdaro stream, opens its streets and squares to a celebration that weaves together devotion, gastronomy, and rural culture.

The Feast of Saint Martin and new wine

The festival is linked to the figure of Saint Martin of Tours, celebrated on November 11th, a day traditionally associated throughout Sicily with the racking of wine and the tasting of the new vintage. In Mongiuffi Melia, the occasion becomes an opportunity to rediscover the flavors of the cold season and the crafts linked to the land, in a village atmosphere where every alley smells of must, roasted chestnuts, and freshly cooked products.

Stalls, tastings, and typical products

The heart of the event is the exhibition market with numerous stalls showcasing handicrafts and typical Sicilian products. Among the specialties featured at the festival:

  • local cheeses, sausage, and cured meats;
  • spit-roasted porchetta and chestnuts;
  • honey, new wine, and beekeeping products;
  • traditional desserts such as cassate, cannoli, and crispelle;
  • bread, maccheroni, and cuddure prepared according to ancient recipes.

Live demonstrations and folklore

One of the most beloved moments is the live production of tuma and ricotta, with raw milk transformed according to traditional techniques. The village streets also come alive with wandering folk music, the evocative parade of the Sicilian cart, guided tours of the ancient palmenti (wine presses) and museum cellars, areas dedicated to children's games, and musical performances by Sicilian folk groups.

The closing on November 11th

The festival concludes in style on November 11th, Saint Martin's Day, with Holy Mass in honor of the Saint followed by a convivial gathering in Piazza San Nicolò, as per ancient tradition. A day that unites the community of Mongiuffi Melia and the many visitors who choose this authentic corner of the province of Messina every year to experience the most genuine side of Sicily.
