Papier-mâché floats, street performers, and masks in the heart of the Nola area
The Saviano Carnival, also known as the Saviano Carnival, is the event that transforms the center of Saviano—a town in the Nola area in the province of Naples—into a grand open-air theater every winter. Its history began in 1979, when master craftsman Nicola Strocchia, in collaboration with Radio A.R.C.I., created the first allegorical float in the Sant'Erasmo district, dedicated to Masaniello. The following year, young people from Largo Girolamo Fortunato presented the «Il Mondo» float, and the first spontaneous parades began to cross the historic center.
The turning point came in 1982, when the Pro Loco «Il Campanile», led by Professor Donato Allocca, recognized the socio-cultural and folkloric value of the festival and established it as a permanent institutional event. Between 1984 and 1985, papier-mâché appeared for the first time, masked groups multiplied, and the festival poster was entrusted to artist Vittorio Avella. In 1988, organization passed from the Pro Loco to the municipal administration, while the 1991 edition was suspended due to the Gulf War. Today, coordination is handled by the Fondazione Carnevale di Saviano, which works alongside district committees and the Municipality.
The heart of the Saviano tradition lies in the allegorical floats, built by district committees using iron, wood, polystyrene, and papier-mâché, sometimes with the contribution of master float makers from Viareggio and Putignano. By 2000, the program featured thirteen floats, accompanied by the lighting of the «fucaroni» (bonfires) and historical pageants. In 2004, for the twenty-fifth anniversary, banners were presented to the thirteen districts. Since 2011, the festival's symbolic mask has been Sisiniell, the 1930s Neapolitan dandy created by artist Carmine Ciccone.
Over the years, the Saviano Carnival has become one of the most popular carnival events in Campania. The Foundation reports audiences exceeding one hundred thousand during peak days, with visitors arriving from across the Vesuvius and Nola areas, from Naples, and from outside the region. For two days, the town fills with color and music, and local associations become the true engine of the festival. It is this choral character—a community building its own celebration together—that distinguishes Saviano from other carnivals in the province.
The 2026 edition, scheduled for Sunday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 17, marked a turning point. Due to new safety and authorization requirements introduced during the commissioner's management, the historic committees chose not to build the floats, and the traditional allegorical parade did not take place. The Municipality of Saviano, together with the Associazione Giovani Teglia, selected through a public call for interest, reorganized the Carnival as a diffused festival: hourly artistic parades, street art, creative workshops, exhibitions at the Villa Comunale, and family shows distributed across the squares, Corso Italia, and Piazzale Enrico De Nicola.
The Saviano Carnival is traditionally concentrated on Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, with a calendar of side events that, in years with floats, extends for about ten days, from the presentation of sketches to the final parade. Dates change each year according to the liturgical calendar: in 2025, the festival took place between February 22 and March 4; in 2026, it was held on February 15 and 17.
For the first time in decades, the 2026 Saviano Carnival did not feature the allegorical float parade. New safety and authorization requirements, introduced during the commissioner's management, made the construction and movement of the thirteen historic floats too complex, and the district committees preferred not to participate. The Municipality of Saviano, in collaboration with the Associazione Giovani Teglia—selected through a call for interest published in January—redesigned the event, focusing on street art, family engagement, and the enhancement of the urban center.
The two days were spread across Corso Italia, Piazza XI Agosto, Piazza Vittoria, Piazzale Enrico De Nicola, and the Villa Comunale, with hourly parades, entertainment by Play Animation, show areas, and an exhibition route dedicated to the memory of the Saviano Carnival.
Saviano is located about thirty kilometers from Naples, in the Nola area. By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, Nola exit, then follow signs for Saviano. The Nola area is also served by the EAV Circumvesuviana suburban rail network, which connects Naples with Nola and Baiano.
During the festival days, the center is subject to traffic closures and road changes. In the 2026 edition, designated parking areas were located on Via Miccoli, Via Sena, and Corso Europa.
The events take place on the streets and in the town squares and are free to attend. Only food and drinks in the dining areas, concentrated on Corso Italia, are subject to payment.
Peak days are very crowded: it is advisable to arrive early, walk from the parking areas, and wear comfortable clothing. The event is particularly suitable for families with children, thanks to the papier-mâché workshops, school processions, and entertainment areas.
