The mid-August festival in the village of Vignale, featuring Picentini cuisine, music, and community spirit
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Sapori e Tradizioni is the summer festival of Vignale, a hamlet in the municipality of San Cipriano Picentino, in the province of Salerno. Located in the inland Campania region, the area rises gently toward the Monti Picentini. Here, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital and the coast, the landscape shifts to cultivated hills, chestnut groves, stone houses huddled together, and a community that gathers in the village squares during the summer. It is in this setting, around the Ferragosto holiday, that one of the most heartfelt festivals in the Picentini territory comes to life.
The format follows the classic tradition of Campanian festivals but with a unique character: rather than an anonymous event area on the outskirts of town, the village itself is transformed into a gastronomic trail. Stalls typically open around 8:00 PM, and visitors wander from one food point to another, plate in hand, through illuminated alleys and courtyards opened for the occasion. The atmosphere is convivial and intimate: affordable prices, generous portions, volunteers cooking and serving, and improvised tables where you find yourself sitting next to strangers who, by the end of the evening, are strangers no more.
The menu is the true heart of the event, drawing on the 'cucina povera' (peasant cuisine) of the Picentini, defined by simple ingredients and deep-rooted memories. Signature specialties returning every year include:
In the winter edition, the menu shifts to cold-weather comfort food: pizzelle with anchovies and welcome white wine, pasta and beans with pork rinds, broccoli and sausage, pork with peppers and potatoes, chestnuts, and calzoncelli.
Every evening of the festival features live entertainment on an outdoor stage in the village. Over the years, the lineup has included pop and neomelodic music groups, cover bands, theatrical performances, vintage fashion shows, and rock nights, culminating in the unmissable lottery drawing that closes the event. These are not big-name festival acts; the programming is intentionally local, designed to get families, young people, and the elderly dancing and singing in the same square.
Behind Sapori e Tradizioni is the Associazione culturale ricreativa Vignale 2012, a group of residents who have turned the festival into a tool for territorial promotion: enhancing the village, introducing it to visitors from Salerno and neighboring towns, and preserving a social fabric that has been lost elsewhere. The event is part of a rich local calendar that, in San Cipriano Picentino, also includes the Sagra delle Sagre dei Picentini, a showcase for all the food and wine events in the district.
Alongside the summer event, the association has also proposed a winter edition of Sapori e Tradizioni, held between late November and early December, featuring craft markets, local products, gift ideas, music, and folklore in both indoor and outdoor village spaces. It is a more intimate format, designed to kick off the holiday season with the same spirit as the August event.
The festival is traditionally held in mid-August, spanning three or four evenings around Ferragosto. At the moment, the dates for the next edition have not yet been officially announced: it is best to keep an eye on the association's social media page, which is the primary communication channel where the poster and full program are published each year.
The 2026 edition of Sapori e Tradizioni in Vignale di San Cipriano Picentino (province of Salerno, Campania) does not yet have an official calendar. Historically, the festival occupies three or four evenings in mid-August, with stalls opening around 8:00 PM followed by live music.
Dates and the program are usually released a few weeks before the event via the poster published on the Associazione culturale ricreativa Vignale 2012 social channels and in the local Salerno press. Those planning a visit can monitor these channels or contact the organizers directly.
While waiting for the announcement, the event's pillars remain: traditional Picentini cuisine, affordable prices, free admission, and a hillside village that becomes a great communal table for a few nights.
San Cipriano Picentino is located about 15 km from Salerno. By car: take the A2 (formerly A3) Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway, exit at Salerno, then follow provincial roads toward Pontecagnano and Picentini; from Salerno, follow signs for San Cipriano Picentino and then for the hamlet of Vignale. By train: arrive at Salerno or Pontecagnano station, then take local buses or a taxi. The nearest airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi (Pontecagnano).
The village of Vignale is small and the streets are narrow: it is advisable to arrive early and leave your car in the spaces indicated by volunteers along the main road, then reach the stalls on foot.
Admission to the festival is free. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls, with the affordable prices typical of local village festivals. It is recommended to bring cash, as not all food points accept electronic payments.
Evenings begin around 8:00 PM and continue late into the night with live music. Wear comfortable shoes for the sloping alleys and bring a light sweater for the evening, even in August: we are in the hills.
