The Santissimo Ecce Homo Festival is the most significant religious and popular event for the community of Piraino, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the province of Messina, in the heart of Sicily. As the locals themselves attest, it is the most anticipated and heartfelt celebration of the year, drawing back many emigrants and attracting numerous pilgrims from neighboring towns.
At the heart of the festivities is the statue of the scourged Christ, the Ecce Homo, kept in the sanctuary of the same name that overlooks the village. The festival weaves together moments of intense devotion: every year, many faithful arrive to accompany the statue in procession, some walking the route as a vow, others marching with torches after sunset. It is a celebration that preserves centuries-old customs that have remained virtually unchanged over time.
Alongside the liturgical events, the festival offers a rich secular program: musical and cabaret shows, evening entertainment in Piazza Libertร , tastings of typical products and local specialties, and the unmissable fireworks display that illuminates the sky over the village. It is an opportunity to experience the authentic hospitality of the Municipality of Piraino and immerse yourself in one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions of the Nebrodi area.
The 2026 Santissimo Ecce Homo Festival in Piraino is scheduled, as every year, for October. At the moment, the official dates and program have not yet been published. According to tradition, the festivities revolve around the second Sunday of October, with the vigil procession, the solemn day dedicated to the Ecce Homo statue and the Madonna of the Rosary, and the octave with the Blessing of the Town at the Saracen Tower. It is advisable to check the Sanctuary's channels for updates on the 2026 calendar.
Piraino is located in the Tyrrhenian Nebrodi, in the province of Messina. By car: A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, exit at Brolo-Capo d'Orlando, then take the SS113. By train: Gioiosa Marea or Brolo station on the Tyrrhenian line, then road connection to the historic center.
The festival is traditionally held in October (second Sunday), with the octave the following week.
Religious events and secular shows are free of charge.
