The summer patronal festival of Ficarra, featuring age-old faith, processions, and barefoot devotees
The Feast of Maria SS. Annunziata is the heart of the devotional and community life of Ficarra, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, Sicily. Although dedicated to the Annunciation—a feast day fixed by the liturgical calendar on March 25th—the most solemn patronal celebration takes place in early August, when the town fills with returning emigrants, devotees, and visitors. The Madonna Annunziata was proclaimed "Queen of Ficarra" in August 1957 and remains the defining identity of the community.
The star of the festival is the precious marble statue attributed to Antonello Gagini, weighing about a ton and a half, which arrived in Ficarra in 1507. Tradition holds that a merchant ship sailing from Palermo to Syracuse was caught in a storm near Brolo; the crate containing the statue was impossible to lift until the local clergy sang the Ave Maris Stella, at which point the crate became light enough to be brought to the village. This event is linked to the famous story of the statue which, according to popular devotion, "sweated blood," a relic now kept in a silver reliquary.
The most intense moment is the procession of the statue, mounted on a richly decorated 18th-century float, as it winds through the village's medieval alleys. A unique feature of the festival is the "piduna", the faithful who fulfill a vow by following the procession barefoot. It is also deeply moving to see parents entrust their children to the statue as a gesture of devotion to the Madonna. The statue is carried from the Sanctuary to the Chiesa delle Logge at the edge of town, before returning in a solemn procession accompanied by the brass band.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the festival offers a rich program of secular events: concerts by the historic "Santa Cecilia" band, the parish choir accompanying the solemn pontifical mass, evening shows in the squares, and fireworks that conclude the festivities. The streets of the town center come alive with lights, stalls, and local products, in an atmosphere that blends the sacred and the profane in the finest tradition of Sicilian patronal feasts.
For the Municipality of Ficarra, the Annunziata Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the moment when the entire community, both inside and outside the town's borders, gathers around its patron saint. Organized by the Parish in collaboration with the municipal administration, the festival is one of the most authentic experiences of the summer in the Nebrodi and is a must-see for those wishing to discover the deepest traditions of Sicily.
The 2026 Feast of Maria SS. Annunziata in Ficarra is scheduled from August 3rd to 5th, preceded by the preparatory rites of the novena. On August 3rd, holy masses will be held at the Sanctuary, followed at noon by the procession of the statue toward the Chiesa delle Logge. In the afternoon, there will be a gathering for the sick with the administration of the sacrament of the anointing of the sick, and in the evening, a concert by the "Santa Cecilia" band. On August 4th and 5th, the commemoration of the miracle will be renewed, and on the evening of the 5th, the evocative return procession of the statue from the Chiesa delle Logge to the Sanctuary will take place, concluding with performances and fireworks.
Ficarra is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Brolo-Capo d'Orlando exit and continuing inland. The nearest train station is Brolo-Ficarra-Piraino on the Messina-Palermo line, from where you can continue by car or local bus service.
The summer patronal festival takes place from August 3rd to 5th, with preparatory rites (novena) held in the preceding days. A second celebration is held on March 25th for the feast of the Annunciation.
Celebrations and processions are free and open to the public. Comfortable footwear is recommended for walking through the historic center's alleys.
