The Carnival of Sant'Agata di Militello featuring allegorical floats, music, and street food
The Santagatese Carnival is the signature carnival celebration of Sant'Agata di Militello, a town on the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Messina, in the Sicily region. The event fills the streets of the center with a parade of allegorical floats, masked groups, music, and a festive atmosphere that brings together families, children, and local associations in one big, joyful procession.
Carnival has always been deeply felt in Sant'Agata di Militello: in the past, the city enjoyed seasons of parades, floats, and masked groups along the streets of the center and near the seafront. Thanks to the work of the Youth Council and the patronage of the Municipality of Sant'Agata di Militello, through the Department of Youth Policies, the event has been relaunched as a permanent project, with the goal of restoring a defining community event that grows year after year.
The heart of the day is the allegorical float parade, which travels through the city streets starting from Via Cosenz. Vibrant colors, elaborate sets, original costumes, and plenty of music accompany the procession, while masked groups and families join in along the route. DJs take turns on the floats, keeping the crowd dancing throughout the afternoon.
Great attention is paid to the little ones, the true stars of the Carnival: the entertainment includes games, baby dance sessions, and shows designed for families, making the event a shared fun experience for both adults and children.
After the parade, the party continues into the evening with street food and drinks in Piazza Crispi and live music and DJ sets in Piazza Castello, where the center of Sant'Agata di Militello transforms into an open-air stage until late at night. Between local gastronomic specialties, stalls from local businesses, and plenty of music, the Santagatese Carnival combines tradition, conviviality, and a desire to be together.
Part of the rich panorama of Sicilian carnivals on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, the Santagatese Carnival represents a moment of gathering for Sant'Agata di Militello and the neighboring Nebrodi municipalities, attracting visitors, families, and curious onlookers who want to experience the most colorful festival of the year in an authentic and popular atmosphere.
The 2026 edition, scheduled for Sunday, February 22 (postponed from the previous weekend due to bad weather), represented the relaunch of the Carnival in Sant'Agata di Militello, organized by the Youth Council with the patronage of the Municipality.
The allegorical float parade started at 4:00 PM from Via Cosenz, with DJs Leone Araca and Vincenzo Ruvolo enlivening the procession. The children's entertainment, managed by "Mary Poppins", offered games, baby dance sessions, and shows. From 8:00 PM, street food and drinks in Piazza Crispi, with the participation of local establishments, gave way in the evening to live music by Agnese Indriolo and the Batia Brothers, closing with the "Locura" DJ set format (Ice Shark and Simon Leebon) in Piazza Castello.
