About Regina della Pace Festival

Every year, in the final days of August, San Martino Valle Caudina gathers around the sanctuary of Santa Maria Regina della Pace for a festival that blends Marian devotion with neighborhood spirit. Between the Crocevia and Torretiello districts in the province of Avellino, three days of religious celebrations, folk music, group dancing, traditional games like the greasy pole, and dance evenings open to all take place in the green heart of the Valle Caudina.

A late August festival in the heart of the Valle Caudina

The Santa Maria Regina della Pace Festival is one of the most cherished events of the summer in San Martino Valle Caudina, a town of just over four thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in the green heart of inland Campania. It is traditionally celebrated in the final days of August, when the heat begins to soften and the evenings in the hills finally become pleasant: it is the moment when the town, after weeks of summer events, gathers for one of its most defining traditions.

The organization is entrusted to the Regina della Pace Festival Committee, which, together with local associations, creates a program each year that balances religious and secular elements. The festival takes place between the Crocevia district, which hosts the evening events, and the Torretiello district, where the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna stands.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria Regina della Pace

The devotional heart of the event is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Regina della Pace, located on Via Imbriani in the Torretiello district. Its history is recent yet quite unique: born as a simple chapel housed inside a container, the place of worship was progressively transformed in the 1990s thanks to the work of Father Ugo della Camera, eventually being elevated to a town sanctuary dedicated to Mary Queen of Peace.

Since then, the sanctuary has become a landmark for the residents of the district and the entire San Martino community, and the traditional late-August celebration dedicated to the Madonna represents its most attended moment of the year. Visitors arriving in town outside of festival days can still head up for a visit: the view over the valley and the Partenio mountains makes the short detour worthwhile.

Between devotion and neighborhood celebration

As in much of the Irpinia region, the festival follows a dual path. On one hand, there are religious services, Marian prayers, and community moments around the sanctuary; on the other, the secular program, which fills the evenings and transforms the district streets into a single gathering space, complete with stalls, lights, and makeshift stages.

It is a town-scale festival, without big names or tickets: people come to meet their neighbors, dance, and let the children play late into the night. This is precisely why it remains one of the events that best captures the summer of the Campanian districts, far from the most beaten tourist paths.

Music, dancing, and traditional games

The program varies from year to year, but recent editions have featured a recognizable formula, consisting of:

  • street bands that parade through the town streets at aperitif time, kicking off the evenings;
  • the greasy pole, a traditional game that continues to attract children and curious onlookers;
  • group and Latin American dancing, followed by DJ sets until late;
  • performances of folk and traditional music from the Campania region;
  • a morning cycling rally in memory of a fellow citizen;
  • revival concerts featuring hits from the eighties and nineties to close the festival.

Everything is free and held outdoors, with local neighborhood cuisine and regional products providing the gastronomic soundtrack.

San Martino Valle Caudina and the Irpinian summer

Nestled at just over 300 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Partenio massif, San Martino Valle Caudina is one of the villages guarding the ancient route between Naples and Benevento, along the Valle Caudina, made famous by the episode of the Caudine Forks. The town preserves its castle, the districts scattered on the slopes, and a solid gastronomic tradition, whose symbol is the cicatiello, the local fresh pasta celebrated by another festival in November, coinciding with the feast of the patron saint Saint Martin of Tours.

The Santa Maria Regina della Pace Festival is part of the municipal summer calendar, which every year brings together dozens of initiatives promoted by local associations between July and the first days of September. Those visiting Irpinia during this period can easily combine the festival with a day of hiking in the Partenio Regional Park or a stop in the nearby villages of the Valle Caudina.
