About Santa Maria di Loreto

Every first Sunday of May, the town of Roccapiemonte, nestled in the hinterland of the province of Salerno, gathers around the Madonna di Loreto. The day begins at 7:30 am with a procession through the town streets, followed by solemn Eucharistic celebrations at Santa Maria del Ponte and San Giovanni Battista, culminating at noon with Mass at the Hermitage perched on Monte Caruso. It is a festival that blends devotion with conviviality: shared outdoor lunches, the town band accompanying the parades, and fireworks to close the evening.

An ancient devotion at the foot of Monte Caruso

The Santa Maria di Loreto Festival is the most cherished event of the year for the municipality of Roccapiemonte, in the province of Salerno, within the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area that marks the northern border of inland Campania. At its heart lies the Hermitage-Sanctuary overlooking the valley from the heights of Monte Caruso: a small place of worship with origins dating back to the 12th century, already mentioned in a document from January 1179 as the church of Santa Maria de la Fracta, later becoming Santa Maria de lo Reto (Loreto) in subsequent centuries.

Until 1807, the sanctuary was under the care of the Benedictines; following the Napoleonic suppression of monastic orders, it passed to parish administration, while the organization of the festivities remains entrusted to the lay confraternity and the festival committee, in close coordination with the parish and the municipal administration.

The day of the festival

Everything revolves around the first Sunday of May. The town wakes up very early: at 7:30 am, the procession departs through the town streets, accompanied by the Città di Roccapiemonte Band. This is followed by solemn Eucharistic celebrations in the two main town churches, Santa Maria del Ponte and San Giovanni Battista, while at noon the community gathers at the Hermitage for the most anticipated Mass.

In the late afternoon, the festival returns to the town with a 7:00 pm celebration at Santa Maria del Ponte and the evening procession, once again marked by the band. The finale, around 9:30 pm, is entrusted to a fireworks display that illuminates the hillside and brings the day to a close.

Sacred and profane, as tradition dictates

What makes this festival special is not its spectacle, but the way devotion mingles with conviviality. Many faithful climb to the Hermitage on foot from the early hours and remain there for the entire day, occupying the meadows and areas surrounding the sanctuary. It is a time for shared lunches, featuring traditional dishes from the Agro area:

  • Baked pasta and first courses prepared the night before
  • Neapolitan taralli and local cured meats
  • Wine and homemade desserts brought from home
  • Games, singing, and dancing among families

As parish priest Father Giuseppe Ferraioli reminds us, these rites bind the sacred and the profane together and serve primarily as a glue for the community: people go to the Hermitage to pray, but also to reconnect.

The Rocchese May: the Majo and the Madonna

The Santa Maria di Loreto festival does not stand alone: it is part of a broader calendar in Roccapiemonte known as the Rocchese May, which opens on May 1st with the Festa del Majo. On that occasion, a procession in period costume departs from Piazza Zanardelli and reaches the Pontifical Basilica of Materdomini in Nocera Superiore for the delivery of the maj (a ceremonial tree) by the mayors of the two municipalities, the exchange of scrolls, and a solemn Mass, followed by an evening of folk music, games, and medieval dances. A spring ritual that has linked the two communities for centuries and prepares the town for the Sunday of the Madonna.

A Jubilee Sanctuary

During the Jubilee, the Monte Caruso sanctuary was included among the Jubilee churches of the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, attracting pilgrims from outside the town and promoting the path to the Hermitage as an experience of faith as well as a scenic walk.

Why it is worth visiting

Visitors will find an authentic popular festival, free from tourist filters: the climb to the sanctuary in the morning light, the sound of the band echoing among the houses, the outdoor lunch with a view over the Sarno valley, and, in the evening, the fireworks over the hill. It is one of the best ways to understand how, in the towns of inland Campania, Marian devotion continues to be both a collective identity and an occasion for gathering.
