About Santa Croce

From May 1st to 4th, Montorio Romano, a village in the Sabina Mountains near Rome, hosts its most heartfelt celebration: the Santa Croce Festival. Established in 1958 after the Crucifix was rescued from the flames at the small church on Mount Calvario, the event blends religious rites, processions, brass bands, fireworks, and evening music in the square. The highlight is the evening torchlight procession, where the Crucifix is carried down from the mountain to the village on the shoulders of the local youth.

A festival born from fire

The Santa Croce Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Montorio Romano, a small village perched on a rocky spur in the Sabina Mountains, in the province of Rome, northeast of the capital along the Via Salaria. The tradition has a precise and dramatic origin: in 1958, the mountain overlooking the town, aptly named Mount Calvario, caught fire for three consecutive nights. The inhabitants climbed up en masse to save the Crucifix kept in the small mountain chapel and brought it down to the village. Since then, that gesture has been renewed every year: it is not a tourist re-enactment, but a collective vow that the community has repeated for nearly seventy years.

The Crucifix torchlight procession

The heart of the festival is the evening of May 1st. As darkness falls, a torchlight procession begins at the church on the mountain and slowly descends toward the town: a long line of fire suspended between the sky and the village rooftops, visible from the entire valley. The Crucifix is carried on the shoulders of the young men and women of the 'leva'โ€”the teenagers turning eighteen that yearโ€”a custom opened to girls in 2016, marking a living tradition that knows how to evolve. Once in the village, the Crucifix is displayed in the parish church of the Santissima Annunziata e Cristo Re, where it remains for the veneration of the faithful throughout the festivities.

Four days between the sacred and the profane

The program runs from May 1st to 4th, alternating between liturgical moments and public festivities, following the classic pattern of central Italian patronal festivals:

  • Solemn masses and the laying of a laurel wreath, accompanied by the Montorio Romano Brass Band;
  • Screening of historical footage of the festival, including films from the seventies, documenting how the rite has been passed down through generations;
  • Evening Via Crucis through the village streets;
  • Fireworks display at the end of the first evening;
  • Children's entertainment and musical evenings in Piazza Risorgimento with traditional dance orchestras;
  • The final ascent to Mount Calvario, with the Crucifix returned to the summit and a solemn mass celebrated outdoors.

The village awakening and the mountain climb

The final day is the most intense. At dawn, around eight o'clock, the bells ring out to wake the village; shortly after, the band parades through the town center. In the late morning, the Crucifix is carried in procession to the top of Mount Calvario, where a solemn mass is celebrated overlooking the Sabina landscape: a moment of deep participation, blending the physical effort of the climb with devotion and a sense of belonging.

Montorio Romano and the Sabina region

With just over two thousand inhabitants, Montorio Romano is one of those Lazio villages that comes back to life during the festival: emigrants, children, and grandchildren of those who moved to Rome for work return, and the houses in the historic center reopen. The festival is therefore also a great family reunion, with long tables, homemade sweets, and typical Sabina productsโ€”extra virgin olive oil, sheep's milk cheeses, cured meats, and crusty homemade bread.

The village is located just a few kilometers from Moricone, Nerola, and Monteflavio, in a hilly area ideal for spring hiking: the trails toward Mount Calvario and the Sabina Mountains offer, on clear days, a view that reaches as far as the Roman countryside. Those arriving for the festival can easily combine their visit with an itinerary through other Sabina villages, a land of oil and abbeys less than an hour from Rome.

A tradition that endured

The Santa Croce Festival was only interrupted in 2020 and 2021 due to pandemic-related health restrictions. During those two springs, the Crucifix remained on display in the village as a sign of comfort for the community. Since 2022, the torchlight procession has returned to descend from the mountain with the same participation as always.
