Every year, in the final days of September, the Municipality of Vallinfreda — one of the smallest and highest villages in the Metropolitan City of Rome, nestled at 874 meters above sea level on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo — gathers to honor its patron, Saint Michael the Archangel. The timing of the festival is no coincidence: it falls after the harvest season and before the plowing begins, following a rural calendar that has marked life in these mountains for centuries. The liturgical feast day of September 29th thus becomes an occasion for several days of religious celebrations, cultural events, gastronomy, and popular entertainment.

Religious rites and civic memory

The heart of the festival remains its spiritual dimension: the solemn Holy Mass in honor of Saint Michael, the evocative procession through the village streets with the image of Mary Most Holy Mother of Grace, and the second procession dedicated to the patron saint, both accompanied by a marching band. Alongside the religious rites, the community observes a deeply felt moment of civic memory: the laying of a laurel wreath at the War Memorial, a ceremony that over the years has also seen the participation of the banner and representatives of the Metropolitan City of Rome.

The Pupazza Dance

The most anticipated moment of the evening in the square is the Pupazza Dance, a tradition found in almost all the villages of the Aniene Valley and the mountains between Lazio and Abruzzo. A large female-shaped puppet, built with a reed frame covered in colorful papier-mâché, is animated from within by a performer who dances and twirls through the crowd until fireworks attached to the structure ignite it in a great, cathartic bonfire. A ritual with ancient roots, likely linked to archaic fire cults and harvest festivals, it concludes the evening in Vallinfreda along with a fireworks display.

Flavors, music, and conferences

The festival is also an opportunity to enjoy the typical products of the Lazio mountains: during the evenings in Piazza del Mercato, tastings accompany live musical performances. The program is enriched by cultural initiatives — such as conferences dedicated to the history and identity of the village — and the presentation of plaques to citizens who have distinguished themselves for cultural, social, and educational merits.

The Centuries-Old Fair

The festivities are sealed by the Centuries-Old Fair, the ancient Saint Michael fair that has drawn merchants, visitors, and curious onlookers from across the valley for centuries, keeping the historical and commercial memory of the territory alive. It is an event that highlights Vallinfreda's role as a meeting point for the communities of the upper Aniene Valley.
