The great celebration of mutton in Piazza Roma, in the heart of the Rieti Sabina region
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sheep Festival is one of the most popular gastronomic events of the summer in Poggio Nativo, a town in the province of Rieti, in the Lazio region. Every year, on an August evening, the village's main square fills with long tables, smoking grills, and visitors arriving from across the Sabina area and the nearby Roman countryside. According to the organizing Pro Loco, the event typically draws over a thousand people to Piazza Roma, the village's open-air living room.
At the heart of the festival is a product that tells the very history of this land: mutton. Sabina has been a land of shepherding for centuries, and sheep have always been a fundamental resource for the rural economy, providing wool, cheese, and meat. The festival revives this memory, bringing back to the table preparations that have been passed down through generations in local homes.
The Sheep Festival is not just for foodies: it is, above all, a village celebration. Families sit at shared tables, volunteers from the Pro Loco of Poggio Nativo serve at the stalls, and the evening continues with live music or DJ sets until late at night. The atmosphere is that of a typical Italian summer festival: informal, lively, generous in portion sizes, and very affordable.
Poggio Nativo stretches along a rocky spur overlooking the Farfa Valley, just a short distance from the famous Farfa Abbey, one of the most important monastic complexes in Lazio. The town is known for the quality of its Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil and its cherries, and it preserves a compact historic center with narrow alleys, arches, and panoramic views of the surrounding hills.
The Sheep Festival is part of a particularly lively summer calendar. The town also celebrates the Ciambella Festival, now in its fiftieth year and linked to the mid-August patronal festivities, featuring historical re-enactments in traditional costumes, as well as other gastronomic events like the Gnocchi with Castrato Sauce Festival. Those visiting Sabina in August can easily combine more than one festival during their stay.
For those looking for the Italy of authentic festivals, far from the most crowded tourist circuits, this event is an ideal opportunity. You eat well, spend little, and connect directly with the local community. It is also a great starting point for discovering the Rieti Sabina, a region of olive groves, medieval villages, and monasteries less than an hour from Rome.
At the time of writing, the Pro Loco of Poggio Nativo has not yet published the official date or the program for the 2026 Sheep Festival. The previous edition took place on August 23, 2025, in Piazza Roma, so it is reasonable to expect a similar timing in the second half of August.
We recommend checking the Pro Loco's Facebook and Instagram pages, where dates, times, and menus are usually announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
By car from Rome: Take the A1 motorway, exit at Fiano Romano, then take the SS4 Salaria towards Rieti and follow signs for Poggio Nativo (approx. 50 km, one hour travel time). From Rieti, the distance is about 35 km along the Salaria road.
The event is held in Piazza Roma, in the center of the village. Parking is available in the surrounding streets and in the parking areas at the entrance to the village: we recommend arriving early, given the usual turnout.
Free admission. You only pay for what you consume, with typical village festival prices and the option to choose a full menu or individual portions at the various stands.
Bring cash, as not all stands accept electronic payments. For overnight stays, the area offers farmhouses (agriturismi) and holiday homes between Poggio Nativo, Farfa, and Fara in Sabina.
