Faith and territory in the heart of the Monti Lucretili

Every year, around December 8th, San Polo dei Cavalieri celebrates both its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari, and the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. It is the most defining event for this village in the Metropolitan City of Rome, perched on the Monti Lucretili about ten kilometers from Tivoli. These two religious occasions intertwine in a single weekend of processions, music, and conviviality, enriched by stalls dedicated to the typical products of the Lazio Region. It is no coincidence that the 2025 edition was presented under the title «Faith and territory: celebrations of Saint Nicholas and the Immaculate Conception with the flavors of Lazio».

Saint Nicholas, patron of the village

The bond between San Polo dei Cavalieri and Saint Nicholas is ancient: the parish church dedicated to the saint from Bari was built between the 13th and 14th centuries and houses a remarkable artistic heritage, from the 15th-century painting of Saint Nicholas above the high altar to the ceiling painted in 1910 by Mario Agrifoglio, depicting the Glory of the Saint. According to local tradition, the patronal festival is celebrated on the Sunday following December 8th, ideally linking it to the Immaculate Conception celebrations, which are deeply felt in the village thanks to the confraternity dedicated to the Madonna.

The traditional program

The religious heart of the festival is the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the church of Saint Nicholas, accompanied by the parish choir, followed by a procession through the streets of the historic center, led by the «San Polo dei Cavalieri 1863» marching band and civil and military authorities. Among the most anticipated moments:

• the procession with the statue of the saint through the alleys of the medieval village;
• the distribution of Saint Nicholas' gifts to children, honoring the saint who inspired the figure of Santa Claus;
• the rites of the confraternities, guardians of the religious traditions of San Polo;
• the festivities in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, featuring traditional gastronomic specialties, songs, and games;
• the fireworks display to close the celebrations.

The flavors of Lazio in the square

Beyond its religious dimension, the festival has become a showcase for typical Lazio products: during the main days, Piazza Guglielmo Marconi hosts stalls and tastings where visitors can sample the specialties of the Tivoli area and the Monti Lucretili. It is an opportunity to discover the rustic cuisine of these Roman hinterland villages, in a Christmas atmosphere that warms the town despite its altitude.

A village to discover

The festival is also an excellent excuse to visit San Polo dei Cavalieri, a village of about three thousand inhabitants dominated by a medieval castle and overlooking the Roman countryside, located within the Monti Lucretili Natural Park. The Municipality, together with the parish, the Pro Loco, and the confraternities, oversees the organization of the festivities each year, which also attract visitors from Tivoli, the Aniene Valley, and Rome.

The 2026 edition

The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially confirmed: following tradition, the celebrations will focus around December 8th, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and the following Sunday dedicated to the patron saint. The detailed program is usually released by the Municipality and the parish in the weeks preceding the festival.
