About Estate Vivarese

Every summer, the small mountain village of Vivaro Romano, located on the far north-eastern edge of the Metropolitan City of Rome, comes alive with the Estate Vivarese. This series of events blends gastronomic festivals, musical evenings, and religious celebrations. Organized by the Festival Committee and the local Pro Loco, the program keeps residents and holidaymakers entertained from late July to late August with traditional dishes, live music, and festive gatherings throughout the village streets.

Summer in the Monti Ruffi village

Perched at an altitude of over 750 meters, on the far north-eastern edge of the Metropolitan City of Rome and just a stone's throw from the Abruzzo border, Vivaro Romano is one of the smallest and most secluded municipalities in the Lazio region. While only a few dozen permanent residents inhabit the village for most of the year, the town transforms with the arrival of summer: those who moved away return to their family homes, vacationers fill the narrow alleys, and the Estate Vivarese beginsโ€”a calendar of events that marks the warmest weeks of the season.

A program that unites the community

More than just a single festival, the Estate Vivarese is a widespread series of events that brings together the many gatherings organized by the Festival Committee and the Pro Loco of Vivaro Romano. From late July to late August, the village hosts food festivals, dance nights, concerts, popular games, and traditional religious celebrations tied to the summer liturgical calendar. It is a time when the small Vivaro community reunites and opens its doors to visitors.

Traditional food festivals

The culinary heart of the festival lies in its food fairs, which bring the flavors of high-valley mountain cuisine to the table. Recurring annual highlights include:

  • Gnocchi Festival, a classic early-season event;
  • Petacce Festival, dedicated to a local pasta shape;
  • Fried Fish Festival, a mid-August staple;
  • Wild Boar Festival, which typically closes the calendar after Ferragosto.

Simple and generous dishes, cooked by volunteers and served under the stars in the small squares of the historic center, accompanied by local wines and regional products.

Music, celebration, and devotion

Alongside the gastronomy, the Estate Vivarese offers musical evenings with dance orchestras, bands, and DJs, as well as family entertainment and outdoor social gatherings. The religious dimension remains central, with services and processions that renew the village's popular devotion and serve as a key identity marker for the community.

Why it's worth the trip

Reaching Vivaro Romano means escaping the chaos of the capital to rediscover the slow pace of an authentic village in the Lazio Apennines, amidst fresh air, panoramic views of the Monti Ruffi, and the warm hospitality of its inhabitants. The Estate Vivarese is the best way to experience it: a village summer made of good food, music, and shared traditions in the municipality of Vivaro Romano, in the province of Rome, Lazio.
