About Christmas in Moricone

Every December, the medieval village of Moricone, nestled on the slopes of the Monti Lucretili, transforms into a charming Christmas village. The historic squares—Piazza Ranne and Piazza Sante Aureli—host markets featuring local crafts, traditional sweets, and Sabina products, while the Pro Loco calendar offers a mix of park walks, children's entertainment, tastings at Castello Savelli, band concerts, and theatrical performances running through to Epiphany.

A village Christmas at the foot of the Monti Lucretili

Just over forty kilometers from Rome, Moricone is one of those villages that reveals its most authentic character in winter. Located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital in the Lazio region, it overlooks the Sabina countryside from the western slopes of the Monti Lucretili. Every December, its historic center dresses up for the holidays with a Christmas Market and a widespread calendar of festive events.

This isn't a massive city event; it is quite the opposite, and that is precisely its charm. Stalls are set up in the village squares, local associations share the organizational tasks, restaurants offer special menus, and the result is a community celebration where visitors are welcomed as guests, not just customers.

The market squares

The heart of the event consists of two distinct gatherings in the historic center. The first takes place in Piazza Ranne, where stalls featuring handicrafts, Christmas decorations, and local food products line up in the morning. The second, a few days later, brings Piazza Sante Aureli to life with the collaboration of local associations, including the Moricone Senior Center.

The stalls primarily feature local produce: extra virgin olive oil, which has always been the agricultural vocation of Moricone, alongside preserves, dry pastries, honey, and handmade crafts. It is a market to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, taking the time to chat with the producers.

The Pro Loco's widespread program

Alongside the markets, the Pro Loco Moricone builds a program each year that spans much of the month, with the patronage of the Municipality and the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park. Recurring highlights include:

  • Nature walks organized by the Monti Lucretili Park, starting from the center with guided tours of the village's heritage;
  • Children's entertainment with Santa Claus and the delivery of letters, often in collaboration with the local committee of the Italian Red Cross;
  • Tastings of Sabina confectionery products in the village's historic spaces, starting with Castello Savelli;
  • Christmas concert by the local town band, a traditional Christmas Eve appointment;
  • Theatrical performances by local amateur groups, bingo games, and group dancing in the days between St. Stephen's Day and Epiphany.

The village and Castello Savelli

It is worth arriving a few hours early to explore the village. Moricone retains its medieval layout, first mentioned in the 13th century when the castle on Mount Morrecone belonged to the Counts of Palombara. It later passed to the Savelli family, who made it one of their fiefdoms, and to the Borghese family in the early 17th century. The baronial palace still dominates the main square, while the church of Santa Maria Assunta houses precious frescoes.

Surrounding the village, the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park offers trails that are accessible even in winter, with views stretching from the Tiber Valley to the Sabina region. Combining a half-day walk with an afternoon at the market is the best way to experience the event.

Dining between Sabina and the Roman countryside

During the market days, local restaurants offer fixed-price tourist menus dedicated to regional cuisine. It is the perfect opportunity to taste homemade pasta, grilled meats, and, of course, the new oil, which has just come out of the local mills in December. Tastings of Sabina sweets organized in historic buildings complete the gastronomic experience.

Why visit

Christmas in Moricone is a great alternative to large, crowded markets. It is easily reached from Rome in just over an hour by car, requires no tickets, and restores the atmosphere of a village December filled with street lights, nativity scenes, a brass band, and squares full of people who know each other. For those visiting Lazio off the beaten path, it is a destination worth the trip.

Christmas in Moricone — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Christmas in Moricone has not yet been announced: as every year, the calendar is released by the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to December 8th. The usual events in the historic center are expected—the market in Piazza Ranne and the one in Piazza Sante Aureli—along with children's entertainment, tastings of Sabina products, the band's Christmas concert, and shows through to Epiphany.

Christmas 2026 in Moricone

The detailed program for the upcoming Christmas season is not yet available. The Pro Loco Moricone, which organizes the event with the patronage of the Municipality and the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park, usually publishes the full calendar between the end of November and the first days of December.

Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect two days of markets in the historic center's squares, a nature walk organized by the Park, the arrival of Santa Claus for the little ones, a tasting of Sabina sweets in one of the village's historic spaces, the town band's Christmas concert, and, between St. Stephen's Day and Epiphany, bingo games, group dancing, and amateur theatrical performances.

The dates indicated in this entry are provisional and will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Moricone or the Pro Loco releases the official program.
