The travelling living nativity scene in the alleys of the medieval village of Pacentro

The living nativity scene "A Pacentro come a Betlemme" is one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in the Abruzzo hinterland. Set in the historic center of Pacentro, a small town in the Province of L'Aquila nestled in the Peligna Valley and the Majella National Park, the event transforms the village's alleys, arches, and stairways into an evocative Nativity itinerary every year. Pacentro, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, offers an exceptional natural backdrop: stone houses huddled together, ancient portals, and, dominating everything, the Cantelmo-Caldora Castle with its towers.
The nativity scene is travelling: the route winds through the streets of the historic center, climbing from the lower districts up to the castle. Along the way, ancient artisan workshops are recreated for the occasion: those of the seamstress, the blacksmith, goldsmiths, woodcarvers, and the creators of mammuccije, the traditional terracotta nativity figurines. There is no shortage of taverns where visitors can taste traditional dishes: sweets, fried pizzas, gnocchi, and chestnuts, warmed by braziers lit in the alleys.
The event is rooted in an ancient artisan vocation: Pacentro preserves the tradition of terracotta craftsmanship for creating nativity figures, handed down by local masters. Thus, the living nativity scene becomes not only a religious re-enactment but also a way to showcase the village, its history, and its folk traditions, bringing to the streets the same art that has shaped the Nativity figurines for generations.
Costumed actors bring the scenes of the Savior's birth to life, while shepherds, artisans, and commoners recreate the atmosphere of a village from times past. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Pacentro with the patronage of the Municipality, represents one of the main winter attractions in the Peligna Basin and draws visitors from all over Abruzzo. The charm of soft lights, fire, and songs among the medieval alleys makes "A Pacentro come a Betlemme" an event that unites faith, tradition, and community identity.
The 2026 edition of the living nativity scene "A Pacentro come a Betlemme" does not yet have an official date. The event usually takes place during the Christmas season, with the traditional appointment around December 26th, among the alleys of the historic center of Pacentro (AQ). Please note that the December 2025 edition was cancelled by the organizers for logistical reasons: it is therefore recommended to check for updated information with the Pro Loco Pacentro before planning your visit.
Pacentro can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Sulmona exit), a few kilometers from the center of Sulmona. The nearest train station is in Sulmona, connected to L'Aquila, Pescara, and Rome; from there, you can continue by car or local bus to the village.
The event takes place in the evening, outdoors, and on uphill paths with cobblestone streets: warm winter clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended. Parking is available in areas on the edge of the historic center, which is closed to traffic during the event.
Participation in the living nativity scene is free.
