About Presepe a Teatro

Every December 29th, the mountain village of Villetta Barrea, in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, transforms into an open-air living nativity scene. Around one hundred local participants, dressed in 19th-century costumes, bring ancient crafts and the Nativity to life along stairways and torch-lit alleys. It is an evocative journey through traditional carols, the scent of local pastries, and the panorama of the Vallis Regia, recreating the daily life of the past at the foot of the Abruzzo mountains.

A living nativity in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park

Presepe a Teatro is one of the most evocative Christmas events in the Alto Sangro area. It takes place in the historic center of Villetta Barrea, a small town in the province of L'Aquila nestled on the shores of Lake Barrea, within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Every year, on December 29th, the village alleys come alive with a grand living nativity scene that involves the entire community and attracts visitors from all over Abruzzo.

Ancient crafts and life in the past

Around one hundred performers, from the elderly to children, wear the clothes of their ancestors to re-enact the daily life of the mountain village in the late 19th century. Along the route, you will encounter ancient crafts that have long since disappeared, carefully reconstructed in their original settings:

  • the blacksmith at the forge and the carpenter in his workshop;
  • the baker, the shoemaker, and the barber;
  • the ropemaker, the tailor, the lumberjack, and the washerwoman;
  • scenes of market life, wine cellars, and domestic village life.

The Nativity and the Vallis Regia

The heart of the performance is the Nativity scene, set up in the upper part of the village overlooking the stunning panorama of the Vallis Regia. According to tradition, the Baby Jesus is the latest newborn in the village, while his parents play Mary and Saint Joseph: a detail that deeply connects the event to the community of Villetta Barrea. At nightfall, the light of torches and Christmas carols accompany visitors through stairways and characteristic alleys, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere.

Flavors and tradition

Along the route, there is no shortage of tastings of traditional sweets and Abruzzo products, offered at stops between scenes. The event, organized by the Pro Loco of Villetta Barrea with the Pietramara Association and the participation of the entire village, was born in the early 2000s and has become a staple of Christmas in the Park, so much so that it is considered one of the most beautiful living nativity scenes in Abruzzo.

An experience between village and mountain

Visiting Presepe a Teatro means discovering one of the most authentic villages in the Abruzzo National Park, where the nativity tradition intertwines with the mountain landscape and the memory of peasant and pastoral civilization. A free event that combines faith, popular culture, and a sense of community, ideal for those seeking a Christmas away from mass tourism, in the silence and beauty of the Abruzzo mountains.
