The living nativity scene and ancient crafts in the alleys of Villetta Barrea

Presepe a Teatro is one of the most evocative Christmas events in the Alto Sangro area. It takes place in the historic center of Villetta Barrea, a small town in the province of L'Aquila nestled on the shores of Lake Barrea, within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Every year, on December 29th, the village alleys come alive with a grand living nativity scene that involves the entire community and attracts visitors from all over Abruzzo.
Around one hundred performers, from the elderly to children, wear the clothes of their ancestors to re-enact the daily life of the mountain village in the late 19th century. Along the route, you will encounter ancient crafts that have long since disappeared, carefully reconstructed in their original settings:
The heart of the performance is the Nativity scene, set up in the upper part of the village overlooking the stunning panorama of the Vallis Regia. According to tradition, the Baby Jesus is the latest newborn in the village, while his parents play Mary and Saint Joseph: a detail that deeply connects the event to the community of Villetta Barrea. At nightfall, the light of torches and Christmas carols accompany visitors through stairways and characteristic alleys, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere.
Along the route, there is no shortage of tastings of traditional sweets and Abruzzo products, offered at stops between scenes. The event, organized by the Pro Loco of Villetta Barrea with the Pietramara Association and the participation of the entire village, was born in the early 2000s and has become a staple of Christmas in the Park, so much so that it is considered one of the most beautiful living nativity scenes in Abruzzo.
Visiting Presepe a Teatro means discovering one of the most authentic villages in the Abruzzo National Park, where the nativity tradition intertwines with the mountain landscape and the memory of peasant and pastoral civilization. A free event that combines faith, popular culture, and a sense of community, ideal for those seeking a Christmas away from mass tourism, in the silence and beauty of the Abruzzo mountains.
Presepe a Teatro returns in the winter of 2026 to Villetta Barrea, faithful to the tradition of the living nativity scene along the village alleys. As of the publication date, the Pro Loco has not yet released the official calendar and program for the 2026 edition: the event is usually held on December 29th, featuring about one hundred participants in period costumes, ancient crafts, and the Nativity scene overlooking the Vallis Regia. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
Presepe a Teatro traditionally takes place on December 29th, in the late afternoon and evening, along the alleys of the historic center of Villetta Barrea.
By car: take the Pescina or Cocullo exit (A25), then follow the SS83 Marsicana towards Villetta Barrea and Lake Barrea. The village is well-connected to Barrea, Civitella Alfedena, and Alfedena. It is recommended to park at the entrance of the village and reach the historic center on foot.
Wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes to walk along stairways and uphill alleys. Admission is free.
