The Christmas village at Castello Cavaniglia, in Bagnoli Irpino
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
There is a moment every December when the Castello Cavaniglia in Bagnoli Irpino stops being just a monument and becomes the home of Santa Claus. This is the simple and joyful idea behind "Santa Claus Castle", the Christmas event promoted by the municipal administration together with the Youth Forum, which in just a few editions has established itself as one of the most beloved appointments in the Alta Irpinia holiday calendar.
The formula is that of a Christmas village, but set within an extraordinary container: a manor whose origins date back to the 7th-8th centuries, abandoned since the mid-19th century and made accessible again thanks to extensive restoration. Walking under its walls while Christmas music plays, with the lights on and elves welcoming children at the entrance, is an experience worth the trip to this corner of the province of Avellino, in Campania.
The program changes from year to year, but some ingredients always return and define the character of the event:
The outdoor area remains open for the entire afternoon, while the shows are concentrated in the evening hours: a choice that makes the event suitable for families with small children, without giving up the night atmosphere of the lights on the castle. The event is designed to be completely accessible.
The second edition, from December 21 to 23, 2023, had already defined the model: three afternoons from 4 PM to 8 PM, with puppet theater, bingo, ring toss, magic shows, and, on the last day, juggling and fire. The third edition, from December 20 to 22, 2024, raised the bar with Frozen characters on Friday, Joy from Inside Out and an illusionism show on Saturday, and Sunday dedicated to letters, Christmas dances, photos with Santa Claus, and a light juggling show.
In December 2025, "Santa Claus Castle" returned as the heart of the Christmas in Bagnoli Irpino program, a schedule spread between December 6 and January 6: alongside the castle, two significant novelties arrived for the town, the Christmas markets and the ice skating rink set up in the ski lift square.
The return of the event is already announced in the official municipal events calendar: in December 2026, the Castello Cavaniglia will host the fifth edition of "Santa Claus Castle". The exact dates and detailed program have not yet been released: they are usually communicated between the end of November and the first days of December through the channels of the Municipality and the Youth Forum.
The Municipality of Bagnoli Irpino, with just over three thousand inhabitants in the heart of the Monti Picentini Regional Park, is known above all for the black truffle celebrated in autumn by the Il Nero di Bagnoli festival and for the Laceno plateau, with its lake and facilities, a few kilometers from the historic center. Visiting the town in December means combining the Christmas village with generous mountain cuisine — truffles, chestnuts, cheeses, and traditional Irpinian dishes — and the possibility, if the season allows, of going up to the snow of Laceno on the same day.
For those arriving from Naples, Salerno, or Puglia, "Santa Claus Castle" is the perfect excuse to discover a winter Irpinia made of villages, silence, and community festivals, very far from the big mass markets and for this reason even more authentic.
The Municipality of Bagnoli Irpino has already included "Santa Claus Castle" among the appointments of its annual calendar: in December 2026, the Castello Cavaniglia will return to dress up as a Christmas village for the fifth edition.
At the moment, neither the exact dates nor the schedule of shows have been released. Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect a weekend in December with afternoon opening of the castle, entertainment and games for children, meeting with Santa Claus and the delivery of letters, evening magic or juggling shows, and an outdoor area dedicated to street food, all in the village of Alta Irpinia, in Campania.
We recommend checking the final program on the channels of the Municipality of Bagnoli Irpino and the Youth Forum before traveling.
The event is held at the Castello Cavaniglia, in the historic center of Bagnoli Irpino (83043), in the province of Avellino.
By car: from the A16 Naples–Canosa motorway, exit at Lioni or Avellino Est and continue along the provincial roads of Alta Irpinia towards Bagnoli Irpino–Laceno. By train: the nearest useful station is Avellino, then road connection. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about a two-hour drive away.
In previous editions, the castle area remained open in the afternoon (roughly from 3 PM to 8 PM), with the main shows from 4 PM onwards and the highlights in the evening. Admission was free. Hours and access conditions for the 2026 edition will be published together with the program.

You are in a mountain village of the Campanian Apennines: heavy clothing, comfortable shoes for the sloping alleys of the village, and, if possible, arrive early to park near the historic center. To combine: a gastronomic stop based on black truffle and a trip up to the Laceno plateau.
