The Salento focaccia festival in Lequile, in the heart of Salento
The Sagra te la Fucazza is one of the most anticipated gastronomic events of late summer in Lequile, a town in the province of Lecce in the heart of Salento. The name, in the local Salento dialect, simply means 'focaccia festival': the event is entirely dedicated to fucazza, the typical local focaccia, offered in dozens of different variations. The festival takes place in the square behind the Madonna della Consolazione parish church, in the town center, where food stalls and a stage for music are set up every evening.
The absolute star is the focaccia dough, stuffed in the most diverse ways. At the stalls, you will find both classic and elaborate versions: with arugula, tuna and artichokes, salami, turnip greens, peppers, ricotta and spinach, or potato. From the simplest to the most heavily topped, the fucazza tells the story of the humble and generous cuisine of Salento, made with garden-fresh ingredients and bold flavors.
The identity-defining heart of the festival is the competition for the tastiest and most original focaccia, open for free to anyone who wants to test their skills in the kitchen. A jury tastes and evaluates the creations in the competition, rewarding both originality and taste: a friendly challenge between families and enthusiasts that has made the event famous well beyond the town's borders.
Alongside the focaccia, the festival offers the great classics of Salento gastronomy: pezzetti di cavallo alla pignata (tender horse meat stewed in tomato sauce), pittule (traditional Apulian fried dough balls), and numerous other local products. To complete the meal, there is no shortage of Salento wine, beer, and other drinks, in a convivial atmosphere that accompanies the evenings.
The evenings of the Sagra te la Fucazza are enlivened by live music, with concerts and bands ranging from traditional Salento folk music to entertainment, for a street festival that combines good food, dancing, and socializing. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the authentic spirit of a Salento town at the end of the summer season.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Lequile together with the Sagra te la Fucazza Association and with the support of the Municipality, the event is part of the rich calendar of festivals and feasts that characterizes the province of Lecce and the entire Puglia region. For visitors, it is also a way to discover Lequile and its territory, just a few kilometers from the Salento capital, among historic centers, masserie, and food and wine traditions.
The Sagra te la Fucazza 2026 is scheduled in Lequile (province of Lecce) for September 16 and 17, according to the Salento events calendar. The festival returns to its usual venue, the square behind the Madonna della Consolazione parish church.
The format remains the one that made the event famous: food stalls with many variations of focaccia, pezzetti di cavallo alla pignata, pittule, typical Salento products, wine, and beer, in addition to the traditional competition for the tastiest and most original focaccia. The evenings are accompanied by live music.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and the names of musical groups, has not yet been published by the organizers: it is recommended to check the final dates with the Pro Loco of Lequile before planning your visit.
