About Sant'Agata Maccheronata

The Sant'Agata Maccheronata is the historic patronal festival of Besenello, in Trentino, which every February marks the start of the Carnival season in Vallagarina. In the Oratory square, free maccheroni with meat sauce—the festival's signature dish—are served, accompanied by a masked parade, mulled wine from the Alpini, sweets from the Fire Brigade, and a raffle. A celebration of taste, joy, and community, organized by the Gruppo Giovani Besenello with the participation of all local associations.

The patronal festival of Besenello

The Sant'Agata Maccheronata is one of the most cherished festivals in the Municipality of Besenello, in Vallagarina, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Dedicated to Saint Agatha, the town's patron saint to whom the parish church is named, the festival blends religious tradition with popular celebration and takes place every February, right in the middle of the Carnival season.

Its timing in the calendar makes it one of the first masked parties in the area: Besenello is traditionally considered the first stop of the Vallagarina Carnival, a constellation of events that brings the valley's towns to life between late January and spring.

Maccheroni with ragù, the signature dish

The heart of the event is the large-scale distribution of maccheroni with ragù, the dish that gives the festival its name and is offered for free to everyone in the Oratory square. The day begins in the late morning with hot broth and the delivery of pasta to the elderly; at noon, the main maccheronata begins for everyone, while in the afternoon, a second pasta dish with a surprise sauce is served.

Preparation and service are handled by the Gruppo Giovani Besenello (GGB), the association that organizes the festival with the help of all the local entities. Many food and entertainment offerings provided by local groups revolve around the maccheronata.

Masks, music, and tradition

In the early afternoon, the masked parade takes place, accompanied by the marching band, with prizes awarded to the most beautiful and original costumes: a moment especially loved by families and children. Throughout the day, you can also try your luck with the raffle and the rich prize draw organized by the Besenello Sports Club.

  • Maccheroni with ragù distributed for free in the Oratory square
  • Masked parade with a marching band and awards
  • Mulled wine prepared by the Alpini Group
  • Sweets offered by the Volunteer Fire Brigade
  • Raffle and prize draw by the Sports Club

A community celebration

More than just a food festival, the Sant'Agata Maccheronata is a meeting point for the entire Besenello community. The participation of associations, youth groups, the Alpini, and the Volunteer Fire Brigade showcases a strong spirit of collaboration, typical of the towns in Vallagarina. Visitors from outside will find an authentic, free, and convivial event, perfect for experiencing the Trentino Carnival amidst genuine flavors and cheer.
