The colorful sand carpets of Corpus Domini at the foot of the Swabian-Aragonese castle
In the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, at an altitude of over 900 meters, the village of Montalbano Elicona (Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily) celebrates one of the most evocative traditions of the Sicilian religious calendar: the Insabbiata. On the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the streets of the historic center are covered with large compositions made of colored sand, arranged to form scenes and symbols inspired by the sacred themes of the feast.
The devotional path winds along Via Mastropaolo, the artery leading toward the Swabian-Aragonese castle and the Mother Church. Here, at dawn on the day of the feast, the confreres and many young volunteers spread colored sands, integrated with flower petals, to give shape to Eucharistic images, liturgical symbols, and meaningful phrases. The result is a polychrome carpet that accompanies the procession of the Blessed Sacrament and remains visible throughout the day, attracting visitors from across the province.
The event is organized by the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, a historic local association that oversees its artistic direction and spiritual significance. The creation of the works involves many young people from Montalbano every year, in a concrete example of passing down knowledge and devotion to new generations. The Insabbiata is therefore a religious rite, a community moment, and a folk art workshop all in one.
Elected Village of Villages in 2015, Montalbano Elicona is a medieval jewel nestled between the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains. Its castle, the residence of Frederick III of Aragon, its stone alleys, and the views over the valley provide a natural frame for the Insabbiata. Nearby, you can also find the evocative megalithic site of Argimusco. Experiencing the Insabbiata means discovering both a living tradition and one of the most fascinating villages in Sicily.
The event is tied to the Sunday of Corpus Domini: the sand carpets can be admired from the morning and throughout the day, coinciding with the liturgical celebrations and the procession. Admission is free.
For Corpus Domini 2026, celebrated on Sunday, June 7, Montalbano Elicona renewed its appointment with the Insabbiata. From the early hours of the morning, along Via Mastropaolo, large depictions in colored sand and petals inspired by the Eucharistic themes of the feast were composed. The Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament oversaw the organization and artistic direction, with the participation of many local youths. The carpets accompanied the procession of the Blessed Sacrament, in a day that drew visitors from across the Metropolitan City of Messina.
Morning: creation of the colored sand and petal carpets along Via Mastropaolo. Daytime: carpets visible to the public. Afternoon/evening: liturgical celebration of Corpus Domini and procession of the Blessed Sacrament along the sand-covered path.
Montalbano Elicona is located in the Metropolitan City of Messina, in the Nebrodi mountains. By car, take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway exit at Falcone or Patti, then follow the internal provincial roads (about a 30-40 minute climb). The nearest train station is Patti-San Piero Patti on the Tyrrhenian line.
The event is free to attend.
Wear comfortable shoes for the stone streets of the historic center. We recommend arriving in the morning to admire the carpets just as they are finished. Combine your visit with the Swabian-Aragonese castle and, if you have time, the megalithic site of Argimusco.
