The patronal feast of the "white-clad" devotees in the Nebrodi mountains, featuring the running of the statue and the traditional door-to-door collection
The Saint Anthony Abbot Festival is the main religious and civic event in Santa Domenica Vittoria, a mountain municipality in the Province of Messina nestled within the Nebrodi Park. Although dedicated to the Egyptian hermit saint whom the liturgy celebrates on January 17th, the most heartfelt celebration here takes place on the first Sunday of September, when the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a collective rite that blends devotion, identity, and memory.
The cult has roots dating back to the 17th century: tradition links the arrival of the saint to Princess Vittoria Di Giovanni, who is said to have donated a painting depicting Saint Anthony. The processional statue, a work of fine craftsmanship, dates back to the late 18th century and depicts the saint in a black cassock, holding a crozier and the flame of fire, his iconographic attribute.
The most emotional moment of the festival is entrusted to the devotees dressed entirely in white, wearing pristine shirts and trousers. At the end of the solemn mass, the "biancovestiti" surround the high altar, lift the statue amidst shouts of joy and invocations in the local dialect, and break into a literal run out of the church and through the village alleys. It is an ancient gesture, charged with pathos, that kicks off the day of celebration.
The float adorned with flowers and the saint covered in jewels and gold ex-votos, offered over time by the faithful, are carried in procession without a predetermined route. The float stops in front of every single house, under the balconies, waiting for offerings: money and candles are donated and attached to the columns of the float. Each stop is interpreted as a sign of good luck for the coming year. The tireless procession can last up to twelve hours.
The exits and returns of the statue are announced by the sound of bells and a historic siren, a legacy of the Second World War, which echoes through the streets of the village. Before the final return to the church, the gold and silver ornaments covering the statue are removed and jealously guarded, while the bearers lift the float with raised arms amidst invocations and applause. The festival concludes late at night with a spectacular fireworks display.
The festival is preceded on Friday by the procession of the patron saint's relics and is part of a series of celebrations that enliven the village between the end of August and the first days of September. Experienced intensely by residents and emigrants who return for the occasion, the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival represents one of the most authentic popular rites in the mountain heart of Sicily, a symbol of the unbreakable bond between a small community and its protector.
The first Sunday of September 2026 falls on September 6th: this is the highlight of the patronal feast of Santa Domenica Vittoria. After the solemn mass, the "biancovestiti" lift the statue of Saint Anthony Abbot from the altar and launch into the traditional race, starting the door-to-door collection that crosses the town center until evening.
The preceding Friday is dedicated to the procession of the relics of the patron saint. The complete calendar of religious and civic festivities, with times and the final fireworks display, will be published by the committee in the weeks prior to the event.
