The medieval historical re-enactment of King Frederick III of Aragon in the village of Montalbano Elicona

The Feste Aragonesi is the most anticipated summer event in Montalbano Elicona, a town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, and one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy," crowned "Borgo dei Borghi" in 2015. Every year, in mid-August, the medieval historic center and the famous Castle of Frederick III of Aragon become the stage for a grand historical re-enactment that draws visitors from across the region and beyond.
The festival celebrates the deep connection between the village and Frederick III of Aragon, King of Sicily, who chose Montalbano as his preferred summer residence, commissioning his "Regia Aedes" upon the existing Norman-Swabian structure. The heart of the event is the Medieval Historical Pageant, which recreates the sovereign's entry "in terram et castrum Montis Albani": a long procession of ladies, knights, men-at-arms, falconers, and costumed performers winding from the Castle to the main square before a large audience.
Throughout the festival, the village steps back in time. The stone alleys come alive with:
The Feste Aragonesi is also the perfect opportunity to visit Montalbano Elicona, perched on the Nebrodi Mountains at an altitude of about 900 meters. Highlights include the Swabian-Aragonese Castle, the Cathedral, the medieval alleys, and the nearby mysterious megalithic site of Argimusco, often called the "Sicilian Stonehenge." The event is organized by the Municipality of Montalbano Elicona in partnership with the Historical-Religious Re-enactment Association, with the collaboration of the Mons Albus, AMALAC, and Pro Loco associations.
The Feste Aragonesi 2026 will return to animate the village of Montalbano Elicona, in the province of Messina. At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the organizers have stated that the calendar will be published shortly. The event is usually held in mid-August and includes the historical re-enactment of the arrival of Frederick III of Aragon, with a costumed pageant, medieval market, falconry displays, and shows. We recommend checking for updated information with the Municipal Tourist Office.
Montalbano Elicona can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Falcone-Montalbano exit and continuing along the provincial road for about 25 km uphill into the Nebrodi Mountains. The nearest train station is in Falcone, on the Tyrrhenian line.
Access to the village streets and performances is generally free; there may be an entry fee for visiting the Castle. For the updated program and schedules, we recommend contacting the Municipal Tourist Office at +39 0941 678019.
The village is paved with stone and features steep slopes: wear comfortable shoes. Evenings at this altitude can be cool, even in August. It is advisable to arrive early for the historical pageant, as it is very popular.
