The patronal feast of Castronovo di Sicilia in honor of Saint Basilio Vitale
The San Vitale Festival is the main religious event in Castronovo di Sicilia, a municipality in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Palermo, in the heart of inland Sicily. The official date is March 9th, the day the community honors its patron saint, Saint Basilio Vitale, a monk who lived in the 10th century and was born in this very Sicilian village. Castronovo is a rare case on the island: it has adopted one of its own citizens as a patron, defying the proverb Nemo propheta in patria (No one is a prophet in his own land).
According to tradition, Vitale was born into a wealthy Byzantine family in the first half of the 10th century. His sainthood remained unknown to the people of Castronovo for a long time, until some inhabitants of Armento, in Basilicata, where the saint's relics rest, revealed that Saint Basilio was their patron. A miraculous episode links the devotion to the site: a master carpenter dreamed he was ordered to go to a specific district of the village to carve the saint's statue from an olive tree; the owner of the land had the same dream, and that place became a site of worship.
The rites begin with the Triumph, the evocative procession of the painting of Blessed Elia, illuminated by numerous lanterns, torches, and flares carried by the faithful. On the day of the festival, the effigy of San Vitale is carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by a brass band and a large crowd. At three points along the route, the bearers tilt the statue to simulate a blessing over the countryside: the festival has a propitiatory character for a good harvest. The day culminates with the return of the effigy and fireworks and musical shows that continue late into the night.
In addition to the March event, Castronovo dedicates a second summer festival to the patron saint, between the last Sunday of July and early August, designed to involve emigrants returning to the village during their holidays. Since 2000, a twinning agreement has been in place with the municipality of Armento, in Basilicata, reaffirmed every year by the presence of Lucanian communities on pilgrimage and the transport of the saint's relics.
Participating in the San Vitale Festival is also a great opportunity to visit Castronovo di Sicilia and its surrounding area, characterized by rural landscapes, ancient churches, and vibrant folk traditions. The festival combines spiritual depth, historical memory, and social connection, reflecting a community deeply tied to its roots.
The 2026 San Vitale Festival was held in Castronovo di Sicilia on March 9th, celebrating 1030 years since the death of the patron saint. The day opened in the morning with the inauguration of the art exhibition at Palazzo Giandalia and the presentation of the volume dedicated to Vitale da Castronovo at the Auditorium, followed by the re-enactment of the twinning with the municipality of Armento in the presence of the mayors. In the afternoon, the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Archbishop Corrado Lorefice took place in the Church of the SS. Trinità, followed by the solemn procession of the San Vitale effigy with the relics brought from Armento, accompanied by the band and pilgrims from Basilicata. The festivities concluded in the evening with a fireworks display.
Castronovo di Sicilia is located in the hinterland of the province of Palermo, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached via the SS189 and the network of provincial roads connecting the Sicani area; it is about 70 km from Palermo. The most convenient train station is Lercara-Roccapalumba on the Palermo-Agrigento line, from where you can continue by car. The reference airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino.
The official patronal festival is celebrated on March 9th; a second celebration is held in summer between late July and early August. Religious events are free to attend.
