Popular devotion in the Gianguarna district of Cammarata, featuring processions, tradition, and fireworks
In the town of Cammarata, a village perched 680 meters high on a rocky slope overlooking the Platani river valley, at the foot of Mount Cammarata (1,578 m)โthe highest peak of the Sicani Mountains in the province of Agrigentoโthe Gianguarna district gathers on the first Sunday of September for one of the most cherished local religious traditions: the Festival of the SS. Crocifisso della Pioggia.
The veneration of the Crocifisso della Pioggia (Crucifix of the Rain) has its roots in an event from 1751. Legend tells that some carriers returning from Palermo with the sacred image were caught in a violent storm; as soon as the Crucifix crossed the threshold of the church, the rain ceased, while any attempt to continue the journey brought the storm back. The Benedictine nuns interpreted this miracle as a divine sign and purchased the sacred image, which has since been kept and venerated in the Annunziata church, a place held dear by the Gianguarna community.
The festivities begin with a solemn Holy Mass celebrated at sunset in the Annunziata church. This is followed by the most anticipated and moving moment: the procession of the Crucifix statue through the streets of the Gianguarna district, accompanied by prayers, hymns, and intense popular participation in an atmosphere of deep reflection.
The Festival of the SS. Crocifisso della Pioggia is not just a religious appointment, but a moment of strong community identity that brings together the inhabitants of Cammarata and the many emigrants who return to the village for the occasion. Devotion to the Crucifix is also renewed in the spring with the tradition of the seven sacred Fridays after Easter. However, the September festival remains the highlight, when the Sicani village lights up with faith and color.
The 2026 Festival of the SS. Crocifisso della Pioggia will take place in Cammarata (Agrigento) on Sunday, September 6, the first Sunday of the month, in the Gianguarna district. The heart of the celebration remains the solemn Holy Mass at sunset in the Annunziata church and the procession of the Crucifix statue along the streets of the district, accompanied by traditional fireworks.
At the moment, the detailed program for the 2026 edition, including precise times and civil or gastronomic events, has not yet been released; it will be announced by the organizing committee closer to the festival date.
Cammarata can be reached by car via the SS 189 Palermo-Agrigento road. The nearest motorway exit is Casteltermini on the SS 189. The reference railway station is Acquaviva-Casteltermini, on the Palermo-Agrigento line. The nearest airports are Palermo (Punta Raisi) and Comiso.
The festival is held every year on the first Sunday of September in the Gianguarna district. Both civil and religious festivities are concentrated on Sunday, with Mass at sunset and the evening procession.
Admission to all festival events is free. Comfortable clothing is recommended for following the procession along the steep streets of the village. Do not miss a visit to the Mother Church of San Nicolรฒ di Bari and the panoramic views of Mount Cammarata.
