The San Vigilio Festival in Pinzolo

Every year, around June 26th, the town of Pinzolo, the tourist heart of Val Rendena in the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), celebrates the San Vigilio Festival, dedicated to the patron saint of the Diocese of Trento. The event takes place at the historic Church of San Vigilio, set in the quiet countryside of the Sorano area, and is organized by the Parish of San Lorenzo with the participation of the Confraternity of San Lorenzo, guardians of a devotional tradition rooted in the community for centuries.

A church and its frescoes

The festival owes much of its charm to its setting. The Church of San Vigilio, documented as early as the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th, preserves one of the masterpieces of Alpine art on its southern exterior wall: the Danza Macabra (Dance of Death), a fresco approximately twenty-two meters long painted by Simone II Baschenis and dated October 31, 1539. The composition features popes, emperors, cardinals, nobles, beggars, children, and the elderly, each led by their own skeleton: a warning of the equality of all before death, commissioned by the Confraternity of the Battuti. Nearby are depictions of the seven deadly sins and a large image of Saint Christopher. Visiting the church during the festival is an opportunity to immerse oneself in this extraordinary heritage.

The festival program

The heart of the celebration is liturgical. On the day dedicated to the saint, the church opens to the public in the morning; in the evening, Holy Mass is celebrated in honor of San Vigilio, followed by the evocative distribution of bread and wine by the members of the Confraternity of San Lorenzo, an ancient gesture of sharing and community. The festival is further enriched by musical events hosted within the church, with concerts that highlight the building's acoustics and intimate atmosphere.

San Vigilio, patron saint of Trento

San Vigilio, the third bishop of Trento who lived between the 4th and 5th centuries, is the patron saint of the entire diocese and the city of Trento, where he is honored with the famous Feste Vigiliane. In Pinzolo, his memory is intertwined with local devotion and the life of the mountain community, making this an event deeply felt by the inhabitants of Val Rendena and a precious opportunity for visitors.
