A summer among the Bronze Age pile dwellings at the Fiavè archaeological site
In the municipality of Fiavè, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), the archaeological hub named after archaeologist Renato Perini houses one of the most important pile dwelling areas in Europe. The site, the Pile Dwelling Museum, and the Archeo Natura Park are part of the "prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps," recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Every summer, the Archeologia Estate festival, promoted by the Educational Services of the Archaeological Heritage Office of the Autonomous Province of Trento, transforms this location into an open-air laboratory where you can relive the daily life of the Bronze Age.
The heart of the program consists of participatory guided tours called "A day in a pile dwelling," led by an archaeologist through the Archeo Natura Park to explore the reconstructed villages, the lake, and the survival techniques of our ancestors. These are complemented by "Did you say pile dwellings?" tours, designed to guide the public through the discovery of the museum and its archaeological collections.
From July to August, the calendar offers weekly activities dedicated to families, using an experimental approach that involves both adults and children. The workshops range from pottery making to weaving, from working with wool and natural fibers to dyeing with plant-based colors, as well as producing dairy products using prehistoric techniques and discovering the plants cultivated along the lake shores.
In addition to tours and workshops, each season enriches the offering with temporary exhibitions, theatrical performances for families, reading sessions, and musical events that engage with other Trentino festivals, such as concerts linked to the Musica Riva Festival. The calendar also includes the International Underwater Heritage Day, dedicated to the submerged archaeology of alpine lakes.
Immersed in the landscape of the Giudicarie valleys, just a few kilometers from the Comano Thermal Baths and the Brenta Dolomites, Fiavè offers a cultural experience suitable for all ages. Archeologia Estate is the best way to actively visit the UNESCO site, blending experimentation, educational play, and knowledge of Trentino's rich prehistoric past.
The 2026 season at the "Renato Perini" archaeological site in Fiavè offers a busy calendar of initiatives from June 27 to September 13. The "A day in a pile dwelling" guided tours are scheduled for June 27, July 16 and 31, August 13, and September 13, accompanied by the participatory "Did you say pile dwellings?" tours. From July to August, weekly family workshops dedicated to pottery, wool, natural dyeing, and dairy production will take place.
Special events include: the "Born to Read" meeting (July 12), the "Vuelta al mundo" concert of the Musica Riva Festival (July 31), the International Underwater Heritage Day (August 21), and the new exhibition "Guardians of Biodiversity" dedicated to mountain beekeeping, inaugurated on August 1, with the workshops "Little Prehistoric Beekeepers" (August 6 and 20) and "In the beehive for a morning" (August 11).
