The San Trifone Patronal Feast in Adelfia, within the Bari metropolitan area (Puglia), is one of the most impressive religious and folk celebrations in the entire region, so much so that locals call it the "queen of patronal feasts." Every year, the village of Adelfia-Montrone—formed by the merger of the ancient centers of Canneto and Montrone—transforms for several days into a grand stage of faith, music, lights, and flavors, attracting thousands of worshippers and visitors from all over Italy.
San Trifone is the patron saint who unites the Adelfia community: his statue and relic are kept in the Church of San Nicola, from where the simulacrum is carried in procession through the streets of the historic center. The most heartfelt moment is the riffa, the bidding competition where the faithful compete for the honor of carrying the saint on their shoulders during the procession. The traditional soundtrack is the famous "Marce du ciuccie" (the donkey's march), performed by the bands as the statue passes by.
The festival is famous for its spectacular artistic illuminations and its brass band concerts, which feature some of the most prestigious traveling bands of Southern Italy performing on stages set up in the square. The pyrotechnic heart of the festival is the fireworks competition, a multi-hour challenge between pyrotechnic firms that illuminates the sky of Adelfia and attracts enthusiasts from all over Puglia.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast has a strong gastronomic soul with the Lamb and New Wine Festival, which brings the streets of the historic center to life. At the various stands, you can taste roasted lamb, nghimmiredde (grilled offal rolls), celery with provolone cheese, and, of course, the local new wine—a feast for the senses that accompanies the feast of the spirit.
The festival preserves ancient and evocative rites: the cannon shot at dawn, historical pageants, the "Waiting for San Trifone" White Night, the launching of hot-air balloons, and the symbolic handing over of the town keys to the saint. An intangible heritage that makes this Adelfia festival a defining event for the entire province of Bari.
