The Saint Lucy bonfires in the historic center of Ruvo di Puglia

Every year, around December 13th, the historic center of Ruvo di Puglia lights up for Fire Rituals – Le Fanòle de Sanda Lecéje, the festival with which the community of the Alta Murgia honors Saint Lucy. Promoted by the Pro Loco of Ruvo di Puglia (UNPLI) in synergy with the municipal administration, the event revolves around the lighting of the fanòle, the large bonfires that illuminate the squares and alleys of the city on the eve of the feast, in the heart of the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia.
In the Murgia farming tradition, fire is a symbol of purification, hope, and the transition toward the light. Historical records show that as early as the 1930s, on the evening of December 13th, the entire town was enveloped in smoke and the flames of hundreds of fanòle lit simultaneously. The rite recalls the figure of Saint Lucy, a martyr from Syracuse persecuted during the Diocletian Empire: even today, fried chickpeas are consumed, which in popular tradition symbolize the saint's eyes. Due to its identity value and multi-decade continuity, the Fanòle of Ruvo has been included in the regional register of Fire Rituals of the Puglia Region.
The central moment is the lighting of the large community bonfire in Piazza Matteotti, blessed as the Saint Lucy procession passes by. Around the fire, the community gathers for the distribution of chickpeas and the tasting of bruschetta and wine, in an atmosphere that blends devotion, memory, and conviviality.
The festival is not just about fire: during the event, the historic center hosts artisan markets and stalls featuring local products, while the Pro Loco organizes guided tours of underground Ruvo, the Cathedral with its hypogeum, the Grotto of San Cleto, the Aragonese Tower, and the city's historic palaces. In the evening, the squares come alive with Apulian folk music groups, ranging from pizzica to jazz influences, accompanying visitors and families late into the night.
An art city known for its Romanesque Cathedral and the famous Talos Vase, Ruvo di Puglia preserves in its fanòle one of the most authentic expressions of Murgia folklore. Participating in the Fire Rituals means experiencing a living fragment of Apulian peasant tradition, where the warmth of the flames becomes a symbol of community and rebirth in the heart of winter.
