San Severo and the Magic of Christmas is the widespread Christmas festival promoted and organized by the Municipality of San Severo, an important city in the Alta Capitanata area of the province of Foggia, in northern Puglia. For over a month, from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany, the historic center lights up with music and events that fill squares, churches, courtyards, and historic palaces, turning the city into a grand festive village for residents and visitors alike.
The schedule combines official ceremonies, musical performances, children's entertainment, and local folk traditions. The inauguration takes place on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, with the lighting of the giant Christmas tree and the illuminations on Corso Garibaldi, in the square in front of the Villa Comunale Luisa Fantasia, accompanied by school choirs and the San Severo City Band. The following weeks feature a succession of concerts, artisan and food markets, the arrival of Santa Claus, and family-oriented activities.
Alongside the scheduled events, the San Severo Christmas preserves deeply felt popular rites. Among these, the great bonfire of December 8th stands out—a votive fire dedicated to the Madonna, lit in the streets of the center, serving as an identity-defining moment that blends faith, community, and conviviality with food stalls and live music. After all, San Severo is a city known for its extraordinary pyrotechnic tradition and patronal feasts, a spirit that is also reflected in the atmosphere of the winter holidays.
The "San Severo and the Magic of Christmas" festival is a perfect opportunity to discover the city's Baroque historic center, its palaces, and its churches in their Christmas attire, immersed in the lights and scents of local cuisine. An event designed for families and those wishing to experience a Puglian Christmas away from the major tourist circuits, in the authentic heart of the Capitanata.
San Severo is located in the province of Foggia, along the SS16 state road and the A14 motorway (San Severo exit). The San Severo railway station is served by regional and national Adriatic lines; it is also the terminus for the Ferrovie del Gargano.
Events are held in the historic center: Corso Garibaldi, Piazza Municipio, Piazza della Repubblica, the Galleria Nino Casiglio of Palazzo Celestini, and the city's churches.
Most of the municipal festival events are free to attend. Specific concerts or shows may require dedicated access arrangements.
Program and updates are available on the Municipality of San Severo website and official channels.
