In Leverano, a town in the Province of Lecce famous for its wine and the Norman-Swabian tower that dominates the square, the San Rocco Patronal Feast is the most anticipated moment of the year. Every summer, around mid-August, this Salento town fills with lights, music, and devotion to honor the saint chosen by the people of Leverano as their primary protector.
Born in Montpellier between 1348 and 1350, Saint Roch (San Rocco) is venerated as the protector of pilgrims, the plague-stricken, and the sick: in popular tradition, he is invoked against epidemics and diseases. He became the primary patron of Leverano during the 18th century, and since then, his feast has marked the community's summer calendar, drawing back emigrants who return home for the occasion.
The spiritual core of the feast is the procession of the statue of San Rocco, carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center amidst hymns, prayers, and the devotion of the faithful, accompanied by brass bands. Solemn masses are celebrated in the Church of San Rocco from the early morning, with the participation of local confraternities that have guarded this tradition for centuries.
Alongside the religious program, there is the civil schedule, organized by the San Rocco Feast Committee in collaboration with the Municipal Administration. The streets of the center are adorned with impressive luminarie (light displays), while Piazza Roma hosts traditional brass band concerts and folk music. The evenings are enlivened by performances and light installations, and the grand finale is entrusted to the famous fireworks display at midnight, which illuminates the Leverano sky before a large crowd.
Like many patronal feasts in Puglia, the San Rocco celebration blends religious fervor with public festivities: food stalls offer typical Salento dishes, families stroll under the lights, and the town experiences some of the liveliest nights of the summer. It is an authentic opportunity to discover Leverano, its identity, and the warm hospitality of the people of Salento.
The program for the 2026 edition of the San Rocco Patronal Feast in Leverano has not yet been released. Based on tradition, the festivities take place every year around mid-August and include the procession of the statue of San Rocco, solemn masses in the Church of San Rocco, light displays in the historic center, brass band concerts in Piazza Roma, and a final fireworks display. The official 2026 dates and the full calendar will be communicated by the San Rocco Feast Committee and the Municipal Administration on official channels.
The festival brings the historic center of Leverano (LE) to life, with the Church of San Rocco serving as the religious focal point and Piazza Roma as the heart of the civil events and concerts.
Leverano can be reached by car via the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road; it is also served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est train line (Lecce-Gallipoli). The nearest airports are Brindisi-Salento and Bari-Palese.
