The patronal feast of Porto Cesareo featuring the sea procession
The Santa Cesarea Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Porto Cesareo, a renowned seaside resort in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the lower Ionian Salento. Every year, towards the end of August, the town gathers around its two patron saints, Saint Cesarea the Virgin and the Blessed Virgin Mary of Perpetual Help, in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion, maritime tradition, and popular festivities.
The tradition dates back to around the year 1100. According to popular legend, Cesarea was a young woman who had taken a vow of chastity. When Saracen pirates invaded the Salento coast, one of them pursued her: during her flight toward a cave, a cloud suddenly appeared, enveloping and hiding the girl from her pursuer, who fell from the cliffs. Since then, the waters of that cave have become a place of pilgrimage and were considered miraculous. This story is the origin of the deep bond between the saint, the sea, and the community of Porto Cesareo.
The most evocative and iconic moment of the festival is undoubtedly the sea procession. The statues of the two saints are placed on separate boats and led in a procession through the harbor waters, followed by dozens of richly decorated boats belonging to the faithful and local fishermen. It is a unique spectacle in the Apulian calendar of events, drawing residents and tourists along the entire coastline. The religious procession, which travels from the Mother Church to Piazza Nazario Sauro, is accompanied by a solemn mass and, in various editions, the Santa Cesarea Palio, a traditional rowing race.
Alongside the sacred rites, the secular program enlivens the evenings with free concerts in Piazza Nazario Sauro, folk music and pizzica performances, brass band exhibitions, artistic illuminations that light up the streets of the center, and impressive firework displays over the sea to close the festivities. Street stalls, food stands, and the lively atmosphere of the promenade complete a festival that, in the height of the summer season, represents one of the most intense moments in the life of this stretch of the Salento coast.
Organized by the Porto Cesareo Parish Festival Committee, the event goes far beyond the religious aspect: it is an occasion where the entire community of this Apulia town comes together, bridging different generations and the numerous vacationers who crowd the beaches of the protected marine area. For those visiting Salento in August, the Santa Cesarea Festival is an authentic immersion into the folk traditions and maritime spirituality of Porto Cesareo.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Cesarea Festival in Porto Cesareo is scheduled from August 21 to 24. As per tradition, the patronal feast will combine solemn religious rites in honor of Saint Cesarea the Virgin and the Blessed Virgin Mary of Perpetual Help with the evocative sea procession, a highlight capable of drawing faithful and tourists from all over the lower Salento.
The secular program featuring free concerts in Piazza Nazario Sauro, folk music performances, illuminations, and firework displays has not yet been fully published: it will be released by the Porto Cesareo Parish Festival Committee closer to the event. It is recommended to follow the official channels of the parish and the municipality to learn about the final line-up and schedules.
Porto Cesareo can be reached by car from the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road, taking the exit for Porto Cesareo/Nardò, or from the SS174 Salentina. By train, the nearest stations are Lecce and Nardò (Ferrovie del Sud Est lines), which are connected to the town by bus. The reference airport is Brindisi-Casale.
Participation in the rites, the sea procession, and the concerts in Piazza Nazario Sauro is free. The festivities are concentrated in the center and along the promenade, between the Mother Church and Piazza Nazario Sauro.
In August, Porto Cesareo is very crowded: it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance and reach the center on foot, as parking near the port is limited during the evenings of the festival.
