The summer festival celebrating pennette pasta in Contrada Santa Domenica, featuring Salame Sant'Angelo PGI and Nebrodi hazelnuts
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Pennette Festival is a traditional summer gastronomic celebration held in Sant'Angelo di Brolo, a town in the province of Messina nestled among the peaks of the Nebrodi mountains in Sicily. The event takes place in August in Contrada Santa Domenica, one of the local districts, during the festivities in honor of Saint Domenica. The festival is now a staple of the local summer calendar, attracting residents, returning vacationers, and tourists seeking the authentic flavors of the Messina hinterland every year.
The heart of the festival is, naturally, the pennette, served with a tasty sauce and enhanced by local products. The gastronomy of Sant'Angelo di Brolo is renowned above all for two excellences: Salame Sant'Angelo PGI, the first salami in Italy to receive Protected Geographical Indication status, and Nebrodi hazelnuts, which are the base for sweets like nzudde. Over the years, the menu has been enriched with other Sicilian specialties, from Nebrodi black pig rolls to arancini, as well as artisanal desserts and ice cream.
The event, which usually begins in the late evening, combines tastings with musical entertainment, transforming the district into a large open-air party space. The Pennette Festival is part of a rich summer program that the Municipality of Sant'Angelo di Brolo dedicates to culture, theater, music, and gastronomy each year, featuring numerous other festivals dedicated to local products.
Sant'Angelo di Brolo is a small village rich in history, art, and culture, which developed around ancient Byzantine monasteries and is now characterized by a heritage of churches and convents. Immersed in the greenery of the Nebrodi Park, a short distance from the Tyrrhenian coast, it is an agricultural center known for the production of artisanal cured meats and hazelnuts. The Pennette Festival is one of the best opportunities to discover the village, its hospitality, and its most genuine flavors.
The 2026 edition of the Pennette Festival is expected, as per tradition, in August in Sant'Angelo di Brolo, in Contrada Santa Domenica, during the festivities of Saint Domenica. At the time of publication of this entry, the Municipality of Sant'Angelo di Brolo has not yet announced the precise dates or the detailed program. The usual ingredients remain confirmed: pennette pasta with sauce, Salame Sant'Angelo PGI, hazelnuts, and traditional local sweets, along with the customary evening of music and conviviality.
Sant'Angelo di Brolo can be reached by car from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway: take the Brolo or Patti exit, then continue inland following signs for the village. Contrada Santa Domenica is located within the municipal territory, along the roads connecting the town center to the Nebrodi hamlets.
The nearest train station is Brolo, on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line, from where you can continue by car or local connections to Sant'Angelo di Brolo.
Admission to the festival is free; tastings are paid for with tickets or upon purchasing the dishes. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and checking the exact dates through the official channels of the Municipality of Sant'Angelo di Brolo, as the calendar may vary from year to year.
