San Rocco Festival and the Ballo della Mammoccia

An end-of-summer ritual in the Simbruini Mountains

Ferragosto in Cervara di Roma, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital (Lazio), means the San Rocco Festival and the Ballo della Mammoccia. Perched at over a thousand meters above sea level between the Simbruini Mountains and the Aniene Valley, this small stone village—one of the highest municipalities in the region—experiences its most intense moment of the year around August 16th, when the historic center fills with lights, colors, and traditional flavors, blending religious rites with popular tradition.

San Rocco, the pilgrim saint

The devotional heart of the festival is the procession on August 16th: the statue of San Rocco, depicted with the dog that tradition says brought him bread during his illness, is carried on shoulders along the steep alleys of the village, accompanied by the historic La Diana brass band. San Rocco, protector against epidemics and patron saint of pilgrims, is venerated in many Apennine villages, but in Cervara, his feast takes on a unique significance, merging with a highly evocative secular rite.

The Ballo della Mammoccia

The ancient Christian rite is counterbalanced by the pagan Ballo della Mammoccia. The Mammoccia is an enormous papier-mâché puppet, dressed in traditional Cervara attire, which makes its entrance into the square around midnight on August 16th, escorted by the La Diana band. Often, a sonnet recited in the local Cervara dialect introduces the theme of the year, then the Mammoccia launches into a wild dance that involves the entire crowd: people dance with her, touch her, push her, cheer her on, clap their hands, and even try to tear her apart. At midnight, the puppet is set on fire in a large bonfire that concludes the Ferragosto festivities as a propitiatory rite for the end of summer and the arrival of the new season.

The festival days

The festivities are spread over several days in August and combine devotion, spectacle, and gastronomy. The calendar usually includes a day dedicated to children, musical evenings with food and wine stands in Piazza Umberto I, the evocative Inchinata procession with band accompaniment and fireworks, live concerts, and, on August 16th, the great day of San Rocco with the procession, fireworks, music, and the Ballo della Mammoccia. There is also a craft market and street food stalls along the path leading to the church of San Rocco.

Cervara di Roma, the village of artists

Known as the village of artists due to the long history of painters and sculptors who have immortalized its views and staircases, Cervara di Roma provides a unique setting for the festival: houses built against the rock, panoramic views of the Aniene Valley, and an authentic mountain atmosphere. Participating in the San Rocco Festival means experiencing one of the most identity-defining traditions of inland Lazio, suspended between the sacred and the profane.
