The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most anticipated event of the year in Castel Madama, an ancient village perched in the Aniene Valley, in the province of Rome, Lazio. Every year, around the liturgical feast day of September 29th, the local community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that unites religious devotion with public festivities, drawing visitors from across the Tiburtine area.

Devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel dates back to ancient times; even before the year 1000, the area hosted a hermitage dedicated to the Saint, a testament to deep-rooted faith. The heart of the celebrations is the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, a neoclassical building designed by architect Pompeo Schiantarelli in 1775, built on the site of a 14th-century oratory, with a facade completed in the early 19th century.

The procession and the 'Macchina di San Michele'

The most solemn and moving moment of the festival is the procession, when the statue of the patron saint is carried through the streets of the historic center. The tradition preserves the historic Macchina di San Michele, created in 1796, which parades amidst the emotional participation of the faithful. The event opens with Holy Mass and continues with the religious pageant, a ritual commemorating the Archangel, protector and symbol of Castel Madama's identity.

Music, entertainment, and festivities in Piazza Dante

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival features a vibrant popular spirit that brings Piazza Dante to life. Evenings offer live concerts, DJ sets, performances by the local marching band and folk groups, and entertainment for children including balloon art, face painting, and magic shows. The festivities conclude with a traditional firework display at Parco Collicelli, lighting up the sky over the Lazio village.
