The spiritual heart of Cerreto Laziale

The Festival of Maria SS. Madre delle Grazie is the most important and deeply felt event in the calendar of Cerreto Laziale, a small town in the Prenestini Mountains near Rome, in the Lazio region. For over two centuries, the entire community has spent months preparing for this Marian celebration, which unites faith, tradition, and popular folklore. The festival is held on the Sunday following September 8th, the day of the Nativity of Mary, and involves residents of all ages, along with many emigrants who return to the village specifically for the occasion.

A devotion born in 1796

The festival has its roots in the Madonna delle Grazie Confraternity, canonically established on April 30, 1796, in the church of San Sebastiano Martire. At the center of the devotion is an ancient painting depicting the Virgin with the Child, attributed to the school of painter Sebastiano Conca. According to tradition, it was brought to Cerreto by a Franciscan friar, Father Clemente, to save it from the requisitions of Napoleonic troops. Since then, the Confraternity has guarded the image and organized the solemn festivities each year.

The 'Calata': the most emotional moment

The most touching moment is the Calata, which takes place on Saturday afternoon: the painting of the Madonna, kept hidden throughout the year, is solemnly lowered so that the faithful can finally admire her face. It is a moment of profound collective emotion, accompanied by music and the festive ringing of bells. In the preceding days, the community experiences moments of intense spiritual preparation, from the Novena to the evocative Diana—the dawn wake-up call that once summoned the people to Mass before working in the fields—and the visits and Communion brought to the sick.

The artistic carpet and the procession

During the night between Saturday and Sunday, the town's youth work on creating the artistic carpet, a refined mosaic of petals and flowers that covers the streets of the historic center. On Sunday morning, the solemn procession winds through the village, and the image of the Madonna is carried directly over the floral carpet, amidst streets adorned with lights and decorations. It is the religious climax of the festival, preceded by a solemn Eucharistic celebration.

Music, bands, and entertainment in the square

Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers a rich secular program. The marching band parades through the streets, while Piazza Guglielmo Marconi hosts evening shows with concerts, dance orchestras, cabaret, and comedy that animate the village until late at night. There is no shortage of traditional fireworks, popular games, and entertainment for children, creating a festive atmosphere that engages both residents and visitors.
