About San Prisco

Every year around May 9th, Nocera Inferiore pauses to honor its patron saint: San Prisco, the city's first bishop. The silver bust kept in the Diocesan Museum is carried through the streets of the Borgo Vescovado, preceded by the night of the candle offering and the midnight ringing of all the city's church bells. Alongside the Cathedral celebrations, the civil program features marching bands, concerts in Piazza Diaz, sweet festivals, street performers, and the Palio of the decorated streets.

San Prisco, the first bishop of Nocera

The San Prisco Patronal Festival is the defining event for Nocera Inferiore, in the province of Salerno, located in the heart of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese. The saint, venerated as the city's first bishop, gives his name to both the Cathedral and the Diocesan Museum that houses his silver bust: two landmarks around which a festival revolves every year around May 9th. Organized jointly by the Municipality of Nocera Inferiore and the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, the event blends solemn liturgy with vibrant street festivities. It is one of the most deeply felt traditions in the inland Tyrrhenian Campania, engaging not only the city but the entire diocesan territory.

The night of the candle offering

Celebrations begin on the eve, May 8th, with "The night of the candle offering," a vigil that has become the most evocative moment of the entire calendar. After the first Vespers, a procession of the faithful travels through the neighborhoods with lit candles toward the Cathedral; the evening continues with a prayer vigil dedicated to the memory and miracles of the saint, culminating at midnight with the simultaneous ringing of all the city's church bells. This soundscape sweeps across Nocera Inferiore from end to end, effectively signaling the official start of the feast day.

May 9th: Pontifical Mass and procession

The day of the solemnity begins early with a marching band touring the city center. In the late morning, the Pontifical Mass presided over by Bishop Monsignor Giuseppe Giudice is celebrated in the Cathedral, attended by the diocesan clergy, confraternities, and representatives from all parishes. However, the most anticipated moment arrives in the late afternoon: the procession. The silver bust of San Prisco, kept in the Diocesan Museum on Via Vescovado for the rest of the year, returns to the city streets accompanied by civil and military authorities, congregations, and a crowd lining the entire route. Municipal offices remain closed for the occasion: May 9th is, for all intents and purposes, a public holiday in Nocera Inferiore.

The civil program

Alongside the religious observances, the festival committee and the municipal administration organize a civil program spanning several evenings, which has grown significantly in scope in recent years:

  • Evening concerts in Piazza Diaz and the Borgo Vescovado, featuring names from the Italian music scene and Neapolitan neomelodic artists;
  • Marching bands visiting from across the region, performing through the streets from the morning of May 9th;
  • Sweet festival, food stalls, and craft markets along the central streets;
  • Street artists and comedy shows, highly popular with families;
  • School competitions dedicated to the culture and history of the first bishop Prisco, with awards ceremonies held in the Cathedral.

The Borgo Vescovado and the Palio

The festival does not end on May 9th: it continues throughout the octave and concludes with a second procession of the bust, this time reserved for the streets of the Borgo Vescovado, the historic district surrounding the Cathedral. This is the time for the Borgo Palio, a friendly competition between the district's streets, which vie for the best decorations, illuminations, and displays: the winning streets receive a ceramic tile featuring the saint's image, which remains on display all year. The Palio has become one of the tools through which the city brings focus back to a long-neglected neighborhood that is now undergoing redevelopment.

What to expect

Visitors arriving in Nocera Inferiore during these days will find a city where the devotional and popular dimensions coexist seamlessly: the morning's quiet reflection in the Cathedral, and the evening's music and lights in the Borgo. It is also an excellent opportunity to visit the San Prisco Diocesan Museum, housed in an 18th-century palace at the entrance to the Borgo Vescovado, and to discover a center of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese often overlooked by tourist circuits, yet home to a religious heritage of great interest.

San Prisco โ€” edition 2026

In 2026, the San Prisco Patronal Festival extended from May 8th to 17th, with the solemnity on Saturday, May 9th. The sixth edition of the night of the candle offering opened the festivities on the eve; on May 9th, the Pontifical Mass in the Cathedral and the evening procession of the silver bust brought together clergy, confraternities, and authorities. The civil program featured the "Cittร  di Viggiano" band, the sweet festival, the Gemelli DiVersi concert in Piazza Diaz, and, on May 17th, the closing of the octave with the Borgo Palio.

An edition spread over ten days

The 2026 edition of the festivities in honor of San Prisco in Nocera Inferiore was presented on May 7th in a press conference at the Municipal Council Chamber, in the presence of Mayor Paolo De Maio, Councilor Giancarlo Pagliuca, the president of the festival committee Mariano Fasolino, and the Cathedral parish priest Father Vincenzo Spinelli. The calendar, built together with the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, opened on May 8th and closed on the 17th with the octave procession.

The solemnity of May 9th

The patron saint's day featured the Pontifical Mass in the Cathedral in the morning, presided over by Bishop Monsignor Giuseppe Giudice, and concelebrated by Vicar General Monsignor Enzo Leopoldo and the diocesan clergy. In his homily, the bishop invited the community to a "moral awakening" and to sow seeds of kindness, honesty, and dialogue to make the territory an increasingly livable city. In the late afternoon, the procession brought the saint's silver bust back through the city streets.

Music and tradition

On the civil side, in addition to the bands and street performances, the 2026 edition's highlight was the concert by Gemelli DiVersi in Piazza Diaz on May 16th and the conclusion on May 17th in the Borgo Vescovado, with the evening procession and the awarding of the Borgo Palio among the district's decorated streets.

Tips

Municipal offices are closed on May 9th for the patronal feast: keep this in mind if you need to handle administrative matters. For the procession, it is advisable to find a spot along the route a little in advance. The San Prisco Diocesan Museum, on Via Vescovado, is well worth a visit before or after the celebrations.
