San Giuseppe fritters in the heart of the San Piero a Ponti district
Every year, as spring arrives, the San Piero a Ponti district in the municipality of Campi Bisenzio (province of Florence) gathers for one of its most delicious recurring events: the Fritter Festival. The event, promoted by the San Piero a Ponti Misericordia, is dedicated to the famous San Giuseppe fritters, the sweet treat that accompanies the period around March 19th throughout Tuscany, marking both the saint's feast day and the traditional Father's Day.
The absolute stars of the day are the San Giuseppe fritters, small golden spheres prepared according to traditional Florentine recipes. In the most common Tuscan version, these are rice fritters, cooked in milk and scented with lemon and orange zest, then fried and generously dusted with sugar. A simple, popular dessert rooted in rural culture, it still marks the transition from winter to the warmer season today, evoking the warmth of home kitchens.
The festival is organized by volunteers from the Misericordia of Campi Bisenzio, San Piero a Ponti section, one of the historic confraternities in the Florentine area. As is often the case in Tuscany, the gastronomic events hosted by the Misericordie have a dual purpose: on one hand, a village celebration, and on the other, support for the volunteer and assistance activities that these associations carry out all year round. Participating in the festival therefore also means supporting a charitable organization deeply rooted in the community.
The event takes place in the afternoon at the Misericordia headquarters on Via Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, in the center of San Piero a Ponti. From the afternoon onwards, visitors can enjoy hot, freshly fried fritters in a cheerful, festive atmosphere that brings together families, children, and curious passersby. It is the perfect opportunity to rediscover an authentic flavor and experience the convivial spirit of the small villages on the Florentine plain.
San Piero a Ponti rises along the Arno river, on the border between the municipalities of Campi Bisenzio, Signa, and Florence, in an area historically linked to agriculture and the artisanal activities of the plain. Festivals like this represent a precious piece of local identity: simple yet heartfelt occasions capable of keeping the memory of ancient recipes alive and strengthening the bonds between the inhabitants of the district and the whole of Tuscany.
The Fritter Festival returned to San Piero a Ponti, a district of Campi Bisenzio (FI), on Sunday, March 29, 2026. At the Misericordia headquarters on Via Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, it was possible to enjoy the traditional San Giuseppe fritters prepared by volunteers from 4:00 PM. An afternoon dedicated to the sweet symbol of the Florentine spring, in a festive village atmosphere.
The heart of the event is the preparation and sale of the fritters by the Misericordia volunteers.
