The Japanese festival of wishes in the green heart of Villa Vogel
The Tanabata Festival is one of the most beloved summer events in Florence for fans of Japanese culture. Organized by the Lailac Japanese Cultural Association, it takes place in the Gardens and Limonaia of Villa Vogel, in the city's District 4, transforming the park into a true matsuriโa traditional Japanese folk festivalโcomplete with music, dance, performances, markets, and authentic cuisine.
Tanabata is the Japanese festival of wishes, inspired by the legend of Orihime and Hikoboshi, two lovers represented by the stars Vega and Altair, who according to the tale can meet only once a year. The heart of the festival is the tanzaku ritual: visitors write their wishes on colorful paper strips to be hung on bamboo branches, a symbol of strength and connection to the heavens. The wishes collected during the event are later taken to Japan for a fire ritual at a temple in the Ibaraki prefecture, highlighting the deep bond between Florence and Japanese tradition.
The two evenings are filled with shows and demonstrations: performances of taiko (the great Japanese drums), traditional Edo-bayashi sounds, matsuri folk dances, popular music, and martial arts demonstrations such as judo and kenjutsu. The event also features the evocative parade of the omikoshi, the portable shrine, as it travels through the park grounds.
The Japanese-style market offers kimonos, yukatas, accessories, ceramics, handcrafted knives, and art objects, while the food area serves authentic Japanese street food, from takoyaki to onigiri. The festival, held in Florence in the Tuscany region, is free to enter and suitable for the whole family.
The 16th edition of the Tanabata Festival brings Villa Vogel to life on June 27 and 28, 2026, with a rich program spread across the Courtyard, Cloister, Limonaia, and the two gardens. In 2026, the festival holds special significance: it is part of the celebrations for 160 years of friendship between Italy and Japan and is held under the patronage of the Embassy of Japan. The event will feature taiko performances, traditional dances, martial arts demonstrations, and all the interactive experiences that have made this Florentine festival of wishes so famous.
