Float parades and the flight of Pinocchio over the skies of San Miniato Basso
The San Miniato Basso Children's Carnival is a historic event in the municipality of San Miniato, located in the heart of the province of Pisa, Tuscany. Established in the late 1970s, it has grown into one of the most beloved local festivals in the Leather District, drawing families from across the region. The parades take place in the outdoor area of the Casa Culturale and are organized by the Carnival Committee in collaboration with the Casa Culturale and the San Miniato Basso Arci Club.
The heart of the event lies in the allegorical floats, built entirely by hand by committee volunteers using papier-mรขchรฉ, paint, and boundless creativity. Over four Sundays, the floats parade to the music of the Orchestra Area Tre, amidst confetti, entertainment, and karaoke for children. The most emotional moment occurs on the final day with the traditional launch of Pinocchio: the figure of the famous puppet is lifted into the sky by hundreds of biodegradable balloons, paying homage to the legend that links this land to Carlo Lorenzini, known as Collodi, the author of The Adventures of Pinocchio.
A standout feature of the event is the accessible float created by the Committee in 2019: a structure equipped with seating and ramps that allows children with disabilities to enjoy the festivities in complete safety, a rare example of an inclusive Carnival in Italy.
Beyond the parades, the Children's Carnival offers afternoon entertainment, rides, music, and snacks for all attendees. It is a deeply popular, free event built by local volunteers, which every year unites the municipality of San Miniato and the entire village of San Miniato Basso in a cheerful, family-friendly atmosphere. A tradition that bridges generations and passes on the spirit of the Tuscan Carnival to the youngest.
The 48th edition of the San Miniato Basso Children's Carnival featured four Sunday parades: January 25, February 1, February 8, and the grand finale on February 15, 2026. The parades started every Sunday at 3:00 PM in the outdoor area of the Casa Culturale, accompanied by the music of the Orchestra Area Tre.
The 2026 edition included a float dedicated to peace, featuring Pinocchio surrounded by children, in tribute to the bicentenary of the birth of Carlo Collodi. The highlight occurred on February 15 with the traditional launch of Pinocchio into the sky, lifted by approximately 400 biodegradable balloons, each carrying a message for whoever might find it.
The parades are held in the outdoor area of the Casa Culturale in San Miniato Basso, a village in the municipality of San Miniato (PI), Tuscany.
By car: take the San Miniato exit on the FI-PI-LI highway, just a few minutes from the center of San Miniato Basso. By train: San Miniato-Fucecchio station on the Florence-Pisa line, a short distance from the location.
Admission to the parades is free. The events take place on Sunday afternoons starting at 3:00 PM.
