The ritual of fire that lights up Deliceto in honor of its first patron saint
In the heart of the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia, the small village of Deliceto preserves one of the most distinctive folk traditions of the Apulian hinterland: the San Mattia Bonfire. Every year in late February, the entire community gathers around the fire to honor Saint Matthias the Apostle, the town's first patron saint, in a night that blends faith, memory, and popular celebration.
The cult of Saint Matthias in Deliceto has ancient origins, likely dating back to the Norman era. According to tradition, the saint was invoked by the inhabitants for protection against Saracen raids; to thank the Apostle for their safety, the people of Deliceto lit large bonfires along the town's streets. From this gesture of gratitude, a ritual was born that, rediscovered and renewed since the late 1970s, continues to illuminate and warm the village today. The blessed embers, taken home as a wish for prosperity, remain one of the most cherished symbols of the festival.
The evening retains a strong religious dimension. In the Mother Church of Deliceto, which houses an altarpiece depicting the martyrdom of Saint Matthias and a bust containing a relic of the saint, Holy Mass is celebrated, followed by an evocative torchlight procession to Piazzale Belvedere, the most panoramic point of the town, where the great bonfire is lit.
The San Mattia Bonfire has been inscribed in the Puglia regional registry of fire traditions, a testament to the cultural and anthropological value of this ritual. Around the flames, free tastings of local products, workshops, traditional games, folk dances, and street artist performances come to life, in an intertwining of the sacred and the profane that makes the Deliceto festival unique.
A village perched in the Monti Dauni, dominated by the Norman-Swabian Castle and overlooking the Tavoliere plain, Deliceto is the ideal setting to discover the most authentic soul of inland Puglia. The San Mattia Bonfire is the perfect opportunity to combine an atmospheric evening with the discovery of a town rich in history, spirituality, and genuine flavors.
The 47th edition of the San Mattia Bonfire was held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in Deliceto, in the Monti Dauni. The main novelty of the year was the choice of a single large community bonfire: the new safety regulations issued by the Foggia Prefecture did not allow for the lighting of the many neighborhood bonfires that had always characterized the festival, so the municipal administration decided to gather the entire community around a single fire.
The event was promoted by the Municipality of Deliceto, with Mayor Pasquale Bizzarro and the delegate for Culture and Tourism, Adriana Natale.
Enriching the evening around the fire: free tastings of local products, traditional games, folk dances, fire-eater and stilt-walker performances, and a DJ set.
The San Mattia Bonfire is held in late February, near the feast day of Saint Matthias the Apostle. Evening events generally begin at 7:00 PM.
