The patronal feast of Casacanditella in honor of Pope Gregory the Great
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The San Gregorio Festival is the most significant celebration for the community of Casacanditella, a small town in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. Dedicated to Pope Gregory the Great, a Doctor of the Church and the town's patron saint, the festival is traditionally held in early September, around September 3rd, the day the liturgical calendar commemorates the saintly pontiff.
The heart of the festivities is religious in nature: the solemn mass celebrated in the Church of San Gregorio and the procession that carries the statue of the saint through the village streets, marked by the notes of the local brass band. It is a ritual renewed every year, representing a strong sense of identity for the inhabitants of this corner of the Colline Teatine, nestled between the Foro and Dendalo rivers.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival is a moment of great conviviality. The village streets and squares come alive with food stalls where you can savor traditional Abruzzese cuisine: arrosticini, grilled meats, pasta alla chitarra, artisanal cured meats and cheeses, and typical desserts accompanied by local wines. There is no shortage of entertainment, with activities for children and live music filling the evenings.
In the evening, the main square becomes the beating heart of the festival, with musical performances and entertainment open to all. The festivities conclude with a traditional fireworks display, lighting up the sky above the Teatine hills and marking the end of the patronal feast.
Visiting Casacanditella during the San Gregorio Festival is also the perfect opportunity to explore a territory rich in history and tradition. The town's name, meaning "white house," hints at Roman-era settlements; its monuments include the churches of San Rocco and San Gregorio, the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Assunta, and the 17th-century Castello Baronale di Semivicoli. This heritage provides a stunning backdrop to a festival deeply rooted in the Abruzzese community.
The 2026 edition of the San Gregorio Festival in Casacanditella will renew the appointment with the village's patronal feast, dedicated to Saint Gregory the Great. At the moment, the official dates and program have not yet been released; the event is traditionally held in early September. Religious celebrations including a mass and procession, food stalls with Abruzzese specialties, and the unmissable evening fireworks display are expected. Updates will be published on the official channels of the Municipality of Casacanditella.
Casacanditella is located in the province of Chieti, in the Colline Teatine area.
